Guess I'd start out by documenting the writing-related part of my trip. Over here in Taiwan it isn't so easy to find good books. So the first thing I did when I got back to Canada was to go on a mad novel shopping spree. I couldn't control myself! Well, here's the results. I think the financial damage I'll leave between me and my wife.
Books:
1) My Majesty's Dragon - Naomi Novik
2) Throne of Jade - Naomi Novik
(After hearing the inspirational story of Naomi Novik's success over a year ago I finally managed to get my hands on the first couple novels! Can't wait!)
3) Wizards (Anthology) - Edited by Jack Dann and Gardner Dozois
4) Steampunk (Anthology) - Edited by Jeff and Ann VanderMeer
5) The Year's Best Science-Fiction 24th Annual Collection - Edited by Gardner Dozois
6) The Ninth Circle - Alex Bell (I bought this one because my wife said the cover looked cool, but from the description on the back it sounds pretty good!)
7) The Name of the Wind - Patrick Rothfuss (The Chapters bookstore clerk recommended this one and he seemed to know his stuff)
8) Writers of the Future Volume XXIII (with a story "Obsidian Shards" by a certain writer you may have heard of
aliettedb)
(Also I needed to buy this to see what kind of competition I'm up against)
9) Storm Front - Jim Butcher (I had to give Dresden a try seeing how popular he is now)
10) The Color of Magic - Terry Pratchett
11) The Light Fantastic - Terry Pratchett
I also scrounged the newsstand for any fiction magazines I could find. I wasn't particularly successful, but managed to get my hands on a few mags:
1) Realms of Fantasy - August 2008
2) Apex Digest - Volume 1 Issue 12
3) Fantasy and Science-Fiction - August 2008 (I got this one free by mail as a promotion. Expect a post up on it very soon)
ROF had a few familiar names this issue:
eugieand
jimhines. I thought both of their stories were excellent.
And that's it. I figure that's enough reading material to keep me quite busy over the rest of this year. Especially since I have a dozen or so other books I've been wanting to read. But of course writing comes first!
