Super Commercials

So let's see if I can do this without... anyway.

Naturally I didn't get to watch the game, and am probably just as happy about that. Had to watch the commercials online after the fact, and I gotta say, not a great year.

First, if these are the summer blockbusters, it's going to be a long summer. Nothing wowed or excited me, and most of them didn't even look vaguely watchable. Even Cowboys and Aliens and Pirates4 weren't particularly well-served by their spots, especially if you've seen the long trailers that've been out for months now.

Second, I see Doritos/Pepsi Max mostly continued with their weird/mean-spirited vibe, although the mind-reading one towards the end was at least funny, although it would have worked better as a beer ad. Speaking of which...

I'd heard Bud had gone with a new agency as part of their new ownership, and it showed, the Clydesdales only had a cameo, and other than "Product Placement" all of their spots ranged from meh to appallingly lame.

Car ads rebounded at least partially from their terrible showing last year. The offerings from the German luxury and Korean compact demographics sucked, the Chevys were mostly bad, (although I liked "Lassie Truck", and I'm still pondering too busy the existence of the Mini Countryman (Maxi Cooper) to have an opinion on its ad. (Audi's spot was the best of the Germans by far, but I'm sorry, your car is still ugly and driven by people like the polo-shirt brigade in the Pepsi "Shooting Cooler" ad)

And I know I'm going to get flack for this, but I didn't think "Darth Vader Kid" was that great an ad. Sure it was cute, but it said nothing about the car. The "Black Beetle" was awesome though.

And I liked Eminem's ad, even if it was more of a commercial for the city of Detroit and the American car industry in general than for the Chrysler 200. (His Lipton spot was pretty good as well, although if I wanted a rapper to sell iced tea there was this guy called, what was his name? Oh yeah, Ice-T)

Other than that, nothing particularly sticks out, except that the cars.com ads were pretty funny, and I swear the second one featured Tex from RvB as the voice of the convertible.

Oh, and the overwhelming desire to find the guy in the "Groupon:Tibet" ad, and everyone responsible for it, and punch them in the face. Repeatedly.
