Very brief note on Project Become Acquainted With Famous Folk Music (abetted by sophia_sol):

OMG "MARY ELLEN CARTER". *must learn this song off properly and sing it at embarrassing moments, such as when pretending to be drunk* XD "And you to whom adversity has dealt the final blow..."

If you love me, promise me you're listening to Stan Rogers, not to any of the thousands of other people who subsequently covered the song.

Then go out and listen to everything else he ever wrote and sang. (Be careful, though, with 'First Christmas'. I find it cathartic, but many people find it weepy and depressing.)

Note: not long before his death, Stan Rogers heard from a man who survived a shipwreck by earworming "The Mary Ellen Carter". It kept him going through hours of hypothermia: made him too damned stubborn to let go and die.

Sadly, my local library has NO STAN ROGERS AT ALL. *grumpyface* They only had one recording of "Mary Ellen Carter", even (and I suspect it has not the right tune, having heard this CD's mangling of some other stuff I actually know).

And my Internet is so very slow that watching YouTube videos is mostly an exercise in knitting-while-waiting. ;P I shall have to see if college's wireless is any faster... *not looking forward to hauling my laptop about again*
