30-day fanfic meme, some more of, flists for the boring of ;-)

Aug 26, 2011 12:52

Is anyone else as bored of this thing as I am? I'm just too stubborn to quit, given that I actually have the energy to plow through it. *g*

21. Sequels - Have you ever written a sequel to a fic you wrote, and if so, why, and if not, how do you feel about sequels?

Yes. I think it was a bad idea. I agree with Rudyard Kipling: never write a sequel just because the first story was popular, or your inspiration will depart and you'll write dreck.

However, if you actually have more to say about the characters or the situation, no harm in writing it down. I'm quite fond of the "Second Jungle Book".

22. Have you ever participated in a fest or a Big Bang? If so, write about your favorite experience in relation to one. If not, are there any you've thought about doing? And if not, why not?

Fests! :D I just did my first second fic fest, sg1friendathon. It was fun. Fests generally are, because you get readers from outside just your immediate circle. (And I kind of enjoy writing to a deadline; till I got into fandom, I'd never written any other way. Though it is awfully freeing not to have to.)

(My first fic fest was mfuwss's Exhibition Remix Challenge. I'm terribly proud of my work in that one, because I set out to write a good introductory example of a remix, and I did it - in the middle of the worst fit of depression I'd ever had. Now that is an Achievement. *srs nod*)

I always think about Yuletide, but writing what other people want and still writing well is not something I'm up to yet. I figure I'll get there eventually, but I need a lot more practice on setting and meeting my own challenges first.

23. When you post, where do you post to? Just your journal? Just an archive? Your own personal site?

My journal first (except for dw_straybunnies fic, which goes there first), then after a few months to let it settle out, the good stuff goes on AO3. The Whofic also goes up on Teaspoon, very intermittently. I've never bothered keeping a personal site - why would I? ;-) LJ does all right for me.

24. Betaing - How many betas do you like to use to make sure there aren't any major flaws in your fic? Do you have a Beta horror story or dream story?

I do my own tech beta (since I'm handy, lol); normally I don't use any other betas. That's a habit I picked up in tiny fandoms where I'd have maybe one to three potential readers and didn't want to waste one of them on the rough draft. ;-)

If I'm really on the fence about a story's quality, and for some reason I can't just let it sit for six months and run it by future!me (or I don't think that'll help, or it didn't help), I'll ask whoever I know in the fandom who's both an excellent writer and likely to be honest with me. Thankfully, I actually have friends fitting that description in most of my fandoms. ;-) *hugs y'all lots*

(On a drabble or so, though, I'll just post and see what people say. Betas are for stories over 300 words or thereabouts. *g*)

25. Music - Do you listen to music while you write? Do you make playlists to get into a certain "mood" to write your fic? Do you need noise in general? Or do you need it completely quiet?

I can't usually write fiction while listening to anything; earplugs are my friends. When I did MaNoWriMo, though, I did the last couple thousand words with a playlist, because it was the last day and my roomie's friends were being pretty noisy. (No playlist in particular - just my usual mix of '60s rock, folk / country, and show tunes.)

Meta or babbling, OTOH... well, right now I've got my "relaxing and not really thinking about anything" playlist going, which tells you how much attention I'm paying to this meme. ;-) But I just got myself a speaker dock for my iPod, so I'm having fun with that. Yay Monkees! :D
