Arcana: Chariot
Time Period: 1934
Name: Riff Greer
Gender: Male
Blood Type: Type O
Birthday/Sign: February 14/Aquarius
Age: 17
Occupation/Grade: 11, School Council Vice President
Room:
PB: Claude from Kuroshitsuji
Appearance: Riff's attractive and he's well-aware of it. He tries to exude openness and honesty, and is always ready with a smile. He stands at about 5'10 with an average build. His hair's black and slightly tousled, but not messy. Riff's dress is always almost perfect but he intentionally leaves himself just a bit off to appear more approachable. He honestly couldn't care less about fashion but wears whatever's classy and fashionable because it's all about image. To his chagrin his eyesight is poor, hence the glasses, but he's learned to make it work for him. His eyes are a very light brown, almost yellowish depending on the light.
Personality: On the surface, Riff's honest, patient, reliable, kind, and cares about everyone around him. He takes his duties as vice president seriously because he knows there are still tensions between the male and female students and he just wants to ensure there's equality for BOTH genders. He's always open to offering a willing listening ear. After all, it’s his duty as vice president to listen and help, right?
Too bad it's an act. The confidence and determination remains the same but inside, Riff's empty and calculating. He doesn't buy any of the bullshit about trust and equality he spits out and is capable of wrapping his plots/schemes/biases/prejudices in deceptively pretty words. Even his 'listening to others' shtick is mostly just a way of gaining influence over people. His mask is a habit from being raised as the ideal son (not that he minds it either, it IS the ideal image after all) but on the rare occasion, his true nature peeks through and that's when you should start to worry. It's not that he dislikes people, he just doesn't particularly like them. They're tools, just like he can be; all that matters is fulfilling your ends.
History:
Riff was seemingly fortunate to be born into the Greer family. His father was a business success (his business flourished in the first world war, enough to protect the Greers from the brunt of the blow in the Depression) and his mother had excellent connections and both of them had the ambition to ensure success for their two sons. Publically, they were an affectionate, 'perfect' family; privately, they were neutral at best.
Riff learned at a young age, after he told his dad he had seen his mom kissing a stranger, that his parents really had no real feelings towards each other. His dad was angrier at the fact his wife had been careless enough to be seen than the act itself. His dad explained that the two hadn't married out of love: it was a mutual understanding that they could both benefit from each other and they tolerated each other enough to be partners. Riff would later see that affairs were common and accepted between his parents, so long as those affairs didn't bring trouble. Affairs were encouraged even, if it brought some material benefit. It wasn't hard for Riff to see the parallels between his parents' treatment of their lovers and towards their children. If Riff performed his role as the ideal son, they would accept he still had a place and continue to treat him well. If he failed, it meant he had no use. If he had no use, there was little point even acknowledging his existence, let along putting much towards his upkeep. That was worse than when they yelled at him for making an error, he found. It still didn't stop him from adapting their philosophy.
Riff's use and role in the family came into question with his relationship with his older brother, Ian. Riff accepted his role as the youngest son and treated his brother with respect when demanded but competition with each other was always encouraged. Though Ian was four years older than Riff, Riff found he could pass him in some areas. Riff took petty satisfaction every time he beat Ian and proved he was more than just ‘the good, youngest child’ and his parents' reminding him of Ian's accomplishments at Riff's age only encouraged him to try harder to beat Ian. When his dad started implying that age wouldn't be a big factor in who would inherit the company, the competition between them heated up further. In public they were still 'loving' brothers but in private they had an antagonistic relationship that included sabotage and the occasional physical blow (nowhere visible of course, that could give the wrong impression).
Unlike his older brother, Riff had an opportunity to attend Adessi. Minus Adessi being a former all-girl's school, there was enough prestige attached to the place, not to mention potential connections, to draw Riff's attention. It didn't take much to get his parents' approval. His first year at Adessi, Riff mainly watched and adapted to his new environment but in the second year, he worked hard to get elected onto student council. Riff's logic was that if he was going to take control of the family company someday, he needed practice. He was going to be at a disadvantage against Ian due to Ian's age and experience; he'd be at a disadvantage in Adessi due to how feverantly the female students clung to student council. You couldn't take over a company if you couldn't even take over a council from a bunch of GIRLS, could you? In his third year he's been successful in becoming vice president but he's still aiming higher...
Other: He's the type of guy who would excel if he ever took drama. He secretly likes theatre a lot, actually, and God knows he has enough practice. However, he avoids it because he feels if he started openly acting it'd weaken his mask or make his real self more visible/suspected.
