[The pause here is filled with the threading wind that frequents rooftop heights with him now and then, though not so often as it used to be. Then he takes a breath and the wind muffles down, as if the speaker has taken a seat blocked by the ledge, lessening all that background noise.]
I think there are a lot of different ways to look at equivalence, mostly because there are. Some people see it like a fair exchange, trading one thing for something of equal value. Other people look at it as logic based, with properties and functions of those properties. And then there are people who use it to take a jab at cupcakes [a hint of a laugh, barely but there and not forced, just mild] , but that probably wasn't actually the point.
[pause]
For me, I think I used to believe equivalence had something to do with things like promises. If I could hold up my end of a deal, it felt like it should be expected that the other person would do the same. When that didn't happen... when everything--- when Nathan--- when I couldn't--- ...I spent a long time trying to figure out what step I missed. What part of the bargain didn't I deliver on?
I'm actually still trying to figure that one out.
So I guess where a lot of different ideas about equivalence are out, up for discussion...I don't know if I can call it one or the other and if I don't have a clear conclusion, I can't give the kind of essay I wrote out for school on the wings of paper airplanes. I can still make you the paper airplane, but that's not really expounding.
Someday, I'm going to figure it out though.
And even if this place has its really low points, I've gotta say the one thing it's really good for is one of the things I always end up needing: time.
Hopefully if I do figure it out, I can take that much back home with me. It feels like it'd be useful there.
