This weekend's dinner experiment: Rosemary Pepper Steak (yum!)

Feb 02, 2005 03:00

What did I do for the storm this past weekend? I cooked! I'd grabbed some steaks from the store earlier in the week in preparation for the weather, so after grabbing some fresh rosemary from the garden and thawing its 1/4-inch casing of ice, I got to work. Here's what I did:

* Start rice.
* Heat up the skillet.
* Pour some EVOO into a smaller container and mash in some fresh rosemary with a fork.
* Grind a good bit of pepper on both sides of the steaks.
* Pour most of the oil and a bit of the rosemary into the skillet and cook the steaks in it.
* When the steaks are almost ready, use a small saucer to melt some butter, and mix in the leftover oil and rosemary.
* Serve rice and steak together; pour rosemary butter over the whole mess, especially the rice.
* Garnish with a bit of unused rosemary.
* Mouth orgasm.

I found that the rosemary oil somehow softened the coat of pepper -- or maybe it just rubbed it off. The result was a very nice subtle but definitely distinct peppery hum under the stronger rosemary taste. radiantbaby's idea of buttery rice made a nice mix with the steak, and the rosemary in the butter tied it together. Overall I was really pleased :)

Good points:
* Mouth orgasm.

Bad points:
* The oil in the butter sauce made the rice a little... well... oily. Next time I might try reserving some rosemary for the butter rather than mixing in the oil.

Overall verdict:
* Mouth orgasm. :-)
