Cloak closures
I'm going to write a blog post soon about this, maybe, because it's mysterious to me. I've been saving some images, including those of the oddly crossed-on-the-chest ties, but I don't really know how any extant cloaks fasten. Have I had my head up my butt, or is this never mentioned in any of the text about extant cloaks or on the patterns? I didn't see any explanation in Costume Close-Up, which has a cloak pattern.
I don't like the fancy pewter closures (are they really period?) but I don't know if ribbons/ties were most common or if hooks and eyes were used beneath decorative ribbons. I guess what I need to know is, have I been oblivious to this information that is clearly out there that everyone knows but me, or is this an area that needs more research in the 18th C world?
