Title: the profusion of matter and stars
Author: dreamingwriter
Rating: G
Warnings: None.
Characters: Helen, Will, everyone else mentioned...
Disclaimer: I don't own this fabulous show. Unfortunately, Sanctuary is a bit out of my price range.
Summary: there is a creeping in her blood
A/N: She's just such a tragic character. Also, unbeta-ed.

she is dying, burning up slowly like a star.

(but starts don't die, not really, not here.)

she can feel it increasing in miniscule amounts as the years pass, but it's a slow creep in her veins that makes her eager to move so she ignores it in favor of doing something productive, and it's not like she can stop death anyway.

sometimes, when ashley is out on a recovery mission, and henry is in his deep, almost comatose, sleep, and big foot (though she hates to call him that) is watching their darkest inhabitants, and will is up too late, reading some book and puzzling over it all in the library, she wonders if this happens to normal people too. if in the moments barely unfrozen in time they can feel death working out the end. if they can feel themselves aging, but not really getting older.

sometimes she drinks tea, or goes to bed, or joins will.

most of the time she finds a safe place and screams, the sound muffled into pillows, releasing the darkness that hangs over her head and tries to enter her body.

so those new firewalls get programmed. and a morrocan were beast is captured, and everything is completed calmly and efficiently and rationally because will is always noticing the little breaks in her.

(she would be comforted that someone will be there when she collapses if she wasn't so certain he thought she was crazy.)

this time the fire has hardly begun to burn when the sensation begins again. she shivers.

someone opens her door and watches her, eyes fixed on her back, and for a moment she thinks that they do understand after all.
