A dark storm is brewing in Manhattan and no one is safe, least of all Clary Fray. City of Ashes picks up days after City of Bones ends and tells the story of Clary Fray, her best friend Simon, surrogate father Luke, and Shadowhunter friends Alex, Isabel and Jace as they battle demons and other forces of evil in the city. It's a thrilling ride, with a couple of surprises along the way and a heaping dose of angst, as only teenagers can do.
They really turned the angst up to eleven in this book. All kinds of longing for Clary and Jace, the Alec/Magnus/Jace intrigue and Simon turning into a frakking vampire? At least this isn't the Joss Whedon universe where Simon would have turned evil upon his conversion to vampirism and killed Clary without a second thought. Loved that Clary and Jace apparently have special powers and got some faint hints that maybe Jace really isn't Jonathan Christopher Morganstern. There's the 'blood of the angel' thing, the star shaped scar on his shoulder, and whatever Imogen (the Inquisitor) whispered to him before she died. Anxiously awaiting the resolution in Book 3 and please, no hints. I like surprises :) Liked the introduction of Maia to the book and I am loving her as a possible love interest for Simon. Poor boy deserves some happiness, even if he is a bloodsucker now :P
So, all in all, still liking the books and anxiously awaiting my copy of Book 3 - City of Glass.
