You Should be Reading....The Hunger Games

I used to love reading, but during college that fell by the wayside and I never really picked it up again. But since I've been unemployed for a while, I decided that I should spend some of my free time by reading more than my usual trashy romance novels (yes, I'll admit to them). I got some recommendations from friends and jumped into things ( Read more... )

Ooh very clever observations you have here, Ms. JASU. I think you are going to love the second one.

It occurred to me in the discussions we've been having that we don't get but the haziest feel for who is controlling things in the Capitol. The Gamemakers are powerful people and there is a President, but we mostly only glimpse life in the capitol through the hair and makeup people, and the Avox, and faceless announcements. I'm eager to see how that unfolds in subsequent books.

Collins does a great job at setting up the love triangle also, because you really don't know which one she has romantic affection for (if either one!) I have a strong feeling the ending will not be about romance for her, but I am pre-disposed to Gale. I love the best-friends-falling-for-each-other trope.

When I read the first couple chapters of THG I was in the throes of pilots obsession and it was the first actual book I'd read and enjoyed in several weeks. (Which is highly unlike me.) The scene in the woods about running away together just seemed so familiar to me and their whole teamwork approach and the way she only smiles and feels like herself when she's alone with him. Theirs is a very private relationship much like K/L's too. And Gale with his raging at injustice and oppression being so political and Kat being so guarded with her feelings and her skill with a bow...it just ALL reminded me of Pilots. Sigh.

It's definitely a very interesting world, especially how the daily struggles of life in the districts and the sadisticness of the Capital are revealed slowly through the book. We definitely don't have a clear idea of who's controlling things in the Capital. The next book appears to be tackling that subject, at least as far as I could tell from the brief plot synopsis that I read this morning. Can't wait until September 1st!

There's a lot of surprises in the second book. It covers more ground than I expected timewise and goes in interesting and unforeseen directions!
