Thought I would share this letter from the paper today...
**********
One of life's great ironies is illuminated by a trip around the supermarket.
A cubic metre of Wamakariri, sitting on the shelves in Wollies, is worth $1370. The same cubic metre of water, packed with sugar and secret ingredients, will sell as Coca-Cola for $960.
But if we gift the cubic metre of water to Central Plains Water and they sell it to our "world-beating dairy farmers" they will convert it using "best practice", into two litres of milk worth $3.60. A net loss of $1366.40. This is progress.

The Waimakariri is a big river here. The one in the picture I just posted actually.
Wollies is Woolworths supermarket chain. Sorry “Store” for you Americans. ;)
Central Plains Water is a proposed irrigation scheme on one of the big rivers here.
A metre is a little over 3 feet. ;) (When will the US catch up with the rest of the world and start using SI units?!?!)
