Taylor Hicks may well be the most unique and, yes the most talented, AI contestant ever to appear on American Idol. Music lovers of all ages joined the Soul Patrol. many of whom had never even viewed AI before, much less voted non-stop for their idol, to enable Taylor to become the new American Idol.
The single of Taylor's specially selected song 'Do I Make You Proud', which Taylor confirms was not the first choice of AI producers and which he, as many fans suspected, had to fight for, is an excellent example of Taylor's exceptional ability to 'Taylorize' a song.
Taylor revealed today that he arranged the endings of each of his AI songs to grab the audience and to allow his own mark to be displayed on each tune, as well as the each performance. Because of Taylor's superior knowledge of music (although not a trained musician), his desire to continue to perform music for a larger audience, and his overall understanding of what imbues music with soul, Taylor was able to make himself 'stand out' during the AI season. His performance of 'Do I Make You Proud' which he wisely recognized as a song that can be used to honor the many personal achievements of individuals (hopefully through the years), may be destined to be the longest lasting of the usually nondescript songs that AI two-finalists have sang over the five seasons of the ever-growing show.
The 'B' side of this disc, 'Taking It To The Streets', was performed during the finals as a repeat performance a fan-favorite from the season that exhibited both Taylor's considerable and unique vocal abilities and his personalized dance moves (otherwise known as the physical expression of the heart and soul Taylor infuses into his music). Performed originally by the Doobie Brothers on their same-titled CD, 'Takin It To The Streets' was written by Michael McDonald, a then-member of the Doobie Brothers, formerly of Steely Dan. Taylor also revealed today that he has been in conversation with McDonald since the Idol finale and that the possibility is being discussed for the two to perhaps co-author a tune or two.
Taylor has released two previous CDs ('Under The Radar' and 'In Your Time') which contain mostly songs of Hicks' own creation. In addition to writing heart-touching music, Taylor is a talented musician mastering both the guitar and the harmonica.
It has been rumored that even though the American Idol Tour will have the ten finalists backed by recorded tracks rather than live musicians, Taylor may well play his guitar during the concert performances (and hopefully his harmonica as well).
The combination of great music performed in the undeniably flawless music stylings of Taylor Hicks, Taylor's overall charm, talent, and charisma, and the dedicated fan base known as the 'Soul Patrol' should converge to make this single a HIT for the new American Idol and hold his fans over until his new CD is released, hopefully before the Christmas season. Taylor is hoping that his new CD will contain some of his own songs and is promising that it will not be released until it is 'good' - and that is probably a pretty sure bet because when it comes to music Taylor is a perfectionist and he has the talent and ability to live up to his own standards.
Taylor is a wonderful and amazing young man, one that can definitely make America proud. A true southern gentleman in every way, Hicks can be a role-model as well as an idol.
This single is a perfect marriage of two styles of music that show off Taylor's versatility and talent and will certainly fill a slot in my CD player for a long time; I predict until it is replaced by Taylor's first full CD.
If you are one of the few people on the planet who hasn't checked out Taylor Hicks' music, now is your chance to buy a sample. If you are a Taylor fan, you already know the quality that exists on the disc, now we need to go for quantity to ensure the success of the release and to share with family, friends, our heros in Iraq, and anyone else you think will enjoy two great songs by America's Hot New American Idol - Taylor Hicks.
Whooo. Whooo. Taylor, your voice is definitely being heard! You certainly make me proud to be your fan!
