Well, I'm on a Mac, and I use a program called Typinator that watches for certain snippets of text and expands them as I've directed, no matter what I'm doing in any program. So for instance, any time I type "mklu" (which stands in my head for "make LiveJournal user"), it replaces those four characters with "" (where CLIPBOARD = the contents of my clipboard, of course). I have several dozen such abbreviations, which I use for everything from HTML/journal code like that bit to canned queries for authors whose books I'm editing (you have no idea how tired I can get of typing out the explanation of why it is perfectly acceptable to split an infinitive OMG). There are a bunch of such programs for the Mac, and I imagine there are for PCs as well, though I have no idea what they might be. Search your usual software sources for "text expander" or "abbreviations" or such terms.
I'm working on a post that will explain to people all the ways to link to users on the three LJ-clone and -fork sites I use, actually (LJ, IJ, DW); still investigating some details, but I hope to have it up soon.
