Okay, I've had some offers of help, so looks like I'm going to have to get my slashy documents (not sure what else to call them) up on the web somewhere sooner rather than later. Meanwhile, here's a "sneak preview": NOTE: For anyone who tried these links before and couldn't get them to work, I've fixed the problem - they should work now! Sorry! It was a straight quote/curly quote problem.

Size Queen, by Predatrix: The first time someone mentioned a Snape/Hagrid pairing, I cringed at the very idea. Squick, squick, squick, squick, squick - or so I thought. Someone beamed me this story, though, and finding myself bored walking to work one day I pulled it up on my palm and started to read (I am an expert at reading and walking, especially since I discovered the joys of loading fic onto my Palm!) And I must admit, I was a little squicked at the first sex scene. But this fic just grew and grew and grew on me. It's a little hot, a little silly, and a little sweet. It made me realize that Hagrid is "human" too (or whatever) - he too craves love and warmth and companionship and, yes, sex. He handles prickly Severus with equanimity, but his moments of insecurity - about his appearance, his desirability, what he has to offer - are poignant. And as for Snape - well, it is moving to watch him learn to appreciate what Hagrid has to offer - not Snape's intellectual equal, not an intellectual at all, but with gifts and intelligence nonetheless. Predatrix has the imagination, the subtlety, and the plain old chutzpah to make this pairing work, and I've found myself drawn back to this story again and again. One tiny squick: a scene that smacks a little too much of DD for my tastes, but just a little. Overall, another definite keeper for me, and I can't wait to read more of this author's work.
Hermitage, by Fabula Rasa (
fabularasa): I've developed a real passion for the pairing of Snape with Sirius Black. They have many years of hatred and jealousy behind them - but they also have much in common. One of the best illustrations of this I have found is in the story "Revelations" by Adrienne (sequel to Perdition and Redemption). It's a Snape/Lupin story, not Snape/Black, but in it Snape and Black become friends of a sort, or at least they go to each other to talk. At first Sirius gets Snape to talk to him about dark things in his past because, as Sirius says, what does Snape have to lose - Sirius's affection and respect? After all, Sirius could hardly despise Snape any more, no matter what he says - this makes it safe to talk. At one point Sirius has a "curious feeling of camaraderie" with Snape: "He had often felt that no one would understand the helplessness and pain he had experienced for the last twelve years. Snape, he knew, did understand. He had been in his own prison." And Sirius tells Snape that he can't talk to Remus about some things because "I can't abide seeing the look on his face whenever Azkaban comes up in conversation. As if he wants to bleed all over in sympathy. As if it hurts him to know. I don't want to hurt him that way."
Anyway, all this is by way of background: why I find something unusually compelling about the Snape/Black pairing. This appears to be Fabula Rasa's favorite pairing, too, though Hermitage is the only story of hers I've read so far. It's another keeper for me. The progression of their relationship, as illustrated in the "detention" in Dumbledore's office, seems so inevitable: they've been through the same things (Azkaban), and Sirius has seen Snape vulnerable. In the end Sirius exposes himself too, and that moves the relationship to the next level. The sex is hot, but absolutely in keeping with and essential to the story. My only complaint: I want to know what happens next, once they leave the office and sober up.
Well, actually I do have another complaint - the transition from Sirius's flat, where he is tending to Snape as he heals, to Hogwarts is a little abrupt. What happens between the two of them after Snape's breakdown in the flat but before his return to Hogwarts? For that matter, what happens the morning after the breakdown? More development here would have improved the story and made it even more compelling. But Fabula Rasa is that seeming rarity in the HP fanfic world: a good writer with good ideas and good characterization. Can't wait to read more.
