He died saving her life. The one and only man River would ever love took a bullet in the heart trying to push her out of harm's way. She cried for days afterwards, calling out his name to the gods. At the funeral, she had to be dragged away from the headstone by Simon and Kaylee.
She eventually came to terms with his death but she never returned to her old self. Instead, she was just a shell--her laugh never carried the same joy, her eyes never sparkled the same innocence. She learned how to breathe without him, learned how to cry on the inside. It was all for him.
Jayne knew when he married River that he could never live up to the man she loved. He knew that she would never love him in the same way. But he vowed to spend the rest of his life trying to fill some part of the hole that was left when the Captain died.
