(personal quarters - knock to enter, intraship communications)

The moment she left Doctor McCoy, Uhura had headed straight for Chapel and Gaila to make sure her friend was alright. Once she was assured that Gaila was in no immediate danger, and that Pavel was going to be alright, she decided to listen to Leo and go back to her room. She gave a passing Ensign the codes for her quarters to pass to Gaila once she was done being checked out, no question about the fact that her friend was going to be staying with her. Besides, they needed all the space they could get with all the extra crew members on board. It was going to be a tight few days until they managed to find somewhere to dock.

Logically she knew that she should send the Captain her debrief, and then shower and rest. But as she walked into her quarters and the adrenaline finally began to wear off, all she felt was tense and edgy. Her actions were justified, she knew that, and it wasn't even worry about what Kirk was going to say to her. She would simply tell him what she had told Leo; she was just doing her job.

Except, she thought darkly as she sat at her desk and pulled a PADD in front of her, it wasn't quite true. There was nothing in her job description that included killing two Klingons. It was acceptable of course, a matter of life or death. But that didn't change the fact that she had done it. They were supposed to be working towards peace, negotiating with them. Yet every day and with every loss, working towards peace seemed a little more unlikely. The Starfleet officer in her believed her actions to be justified, but the diplomat, the one who had argued in Interspecies Ethics against those who refused to offer understanding to different cultures, was disgusted with herself.

Looking down at the PADD, she realized that she hadn't typed a damn thing. She wriggled the fingers of her newly healed finger with an awkward wrinkle of her nose. She hated those things, they always made her joints a little stiff for a few hours after the bone had been mended. Still, it could have been worse. Exhaling a deep, long breath, Uhura quickly wrote up a brief report that would hopefully provide the Captain with the details he needed to please Starfleet Command. If not, they could wait. She wasn't really in the pleasing mood.

Once done with her few transmissions, she left the PADD running as they sent and took herself for that shower. She took longer than normal, using the traditional water kind to ease out all the aches and kinks medical could not. Her uniform was ruined, so she stuffed it in the garbage disposal and out of her mind, finally free of any trace of the ruined Farragut. There was no point in dressing, Leo had forbidden her from going anywhere near the bridge for two whole shifts - which she would protest against in the morning. So she slipped on a robe and picked up the PADD, curling up on her bed with it propped beside her.

She thought briefly about contacting Spock, to allow him to assure her logically that they had all done the best they could. But nothing about what she was feeling was logical, and it seemed unfair to make him put up with her emotional outbursts when he was struggling with so much of his own. So instead she tapped the PADD and brought up her mother's most recent holo, looped it on repeat and listened to the soothing sound of her family's latest news. Sometimes, no matter how old she got, there was nothing like a mothers comfort.

No doubt you have read the bridge report and have a complete copy of my transmission with the Klingons. After I beamed over to the Farragut I instructed the three security Ensigns to evacuate as best they could, which I am told they did to the best of their ability.

Though I'm sure I don't need to, I wish to comment on Ensign Chekov's admirable performance. Not only did he put his own life in danger in trying to contact the Enterprise, but while injured he managed to boost our communication frequency to allow Mr. Scott to beam us off. I can only hope Starfleet recognises this bravery.

Also, Acting Captain Gaila managed to evacuate as many people as possible before finding Ensign Chekov and myself, during which time she managed to incapacitate a Klingon warrior. As with Ensign Chekov, her actions were nothing but commendable.

The Klingons that attacked me were carrying bat'leth blades, which allows me to assume they were a D7-class warrior vessel and not of any higher importance within the Klingon hierarchy. I hope you'll forward that information to Starfleet, as I have my suspicions they were rogue and if this is true, the Empire shouldn't be held accountable for their actions. Especially if this harms any ongoing negotiations.

Doctor McCoy has excused me from two shifts on the bridge, so if you need any other details I'll be in my quarters.

Lieutenant N. Uhura out.

Doctor McCoy has excused me from my next two shifts, so could the two of you replace me on the bridge? If you have any problems, feel free to contact me and of course I'll owe you a shift off.
