We learned on Monday January 5th that I would be induced. To celebrate our baby's impending arrival we went out for a fancy lunch at the Italian restaurant Il Terrazzo. The next day David and Marika drove us to our 11 am appointment at the Victoria General Hospital.
The nurses looking after us while I was induced were named Margie and Gail. When we heard Margie's name Tim and I shot knowing looks at each other from across the room.
At 1 pm, I was induced with Cervadil. For the next few hours I was uncomfortable with back pain and when I went for a walk around the ward my water broke. Around dinner time, we were transferred to the labour and delivery ward. Our nurse Jen administered Oxytocin to continue the induction. By 8 pm I was experiencing real contractions and 5 cms dilated. I used the laughing gas for some time and after some time asked for ‘the real drugs’ (i.e. an epidural). After receiving the epidural, a resident Dr and our nurse Jen checked and I was 9 cms dilated. Dr Down was called and soon after he arrived I started pushing.
Just 12 hours after the induction begun and 5 hours of active labour our baby was born at 1:05 am. The Dr announced that she was a girl and we named her Marjorie June Collins Thielmann. She was small but healthy with a full head of dark hair. Everyone agreed that she was beautiful and everyone she met commented on her hair and her long eye lashes.
We stayed in the hospital for 4 nights. They kept us longer than usual because Marjorie was small and they wanted to make sure she was nursing well and not losing too much weight. Garry and Kim (my aunt and uncle) visited us in the hospital. My colleague Kaylie drove our car to pick us up. Marjorie was 5 lbs 9 ounces when we left the hospital.
