A/R drabbles

Just four little drabbles I'd written. And many thanks to injuredathlete for beta and making them look better than I ever could.
Raiting: K
Timeline: First one is set between seasons 2 and 3 and I'm not sure about the others, but no spoilers.

Drabble #1

Sometimes he feels like a stalker. More often he thinks that he should have been more obsessed with her. Should have more mementos from the time she was still with him. As he pulls the box with his most treasured possessions out from its hiding place in the closet, Bill can't help but wonder. Laura had always seemed such an integral part of his life, that it feels impossible for this box to be so small.

He intended to simply add the joint of New Caprican weed to the collection but once the box was opened, it had ceased to be simple. He gently took pieces of torn cards from the top - there should be broken pencil near them, but it always managed to roll toward a darkened corner. Under the cards were x-ray scans, blessedly clean and without any trace of cancer; he knows Cottle still has no idea where those disappeared to. An empty champagne bottle Chief Tyrol had been tricked into giving him - no doubt humouring a foolish old man. Next to the bottle is the little black box, which once held his admiral pins; it is sitting atop the maps of Kobol, edge with his scribbles comments. Both parts of the pencil are found nestled against the leather of Dark Day. He meant what he said about never lending books - that one is Laura's; he’s simply keeping it safe for her until she can ask for it back.

Every newspaper article ever printed within the ragtag fleet mentioning the president and some old notes Laura included with various reports line the bottom of the box. He knows there are rules about recycling paper, but he simply doesn’t have heart to do it. Junk for everyone else, priceless memories for him.

Something to connect him to her.

Something to remind him, Laura Roslin was, is, and will always be part of his life. The smattering of items in the box echo the sentiments that haunt his days. Not enough. Not enough items; not enough memories; not enough time. But it’s all he has for now.

Because she is on that frakking excuse for a planet, and he is still home, in space. All he can do is hold out for that one day; one day when he builds her a cabin near a stream. Or one day when he calls her to Galactica and refuses to let her go back to the muddy surface. One day.

Drabble #2

Nobody knows, but she keeps a pile of non-important reports in the bottom drawer of her desk; selects them carefully, so that overlooking those problems won't cause the Fleet any harm. She makes sure no one is going to question her about the time it takes her to deal with such trivial matters. And if anyone ever wonders why she doesn't just give those papers to one of her aides, she knows nothing about it. Maybe she doesn't want to know.

Because there are times when she needs an excuse - a reason that will look and sound official. And when there is nothing legitimate from that day, she opens the bottom drawer of her desk and sinks into her private stash.

Perhaps asking if the rumor about Galactica being a cylon sounds a bit more ridiculous than official - but the file has names and dates and she can pretend she takes it seriously. She can do that… she can do pretty much anything given the proper motivation.

And wishing to hear his voice provides more motivation than she could ever have believed.

"This is President. I need to speak with the Admiral, please"

Drabble #3

He never lends books but there are too many in his collection she has never read. Seeing Laura curled on his couch engrossed in yet another mystery makes Bill glad he stuck to his principles. He likes having Laura around, even more so when she isn't President Roslin. And as he had learned, there is no trace of the President in Laura when she is reading something that isn’t embossed with the seal of her office.

Barefoot and having discarded her jacket sometime ago, Laura looked as if she belonged in his quarters. As far as he is concerned, she did. Desk, armchair, couch, rack, she belonged in any of them should she ever want to. He had never phrased it quite that way of course but he is certain Laura knows it. She has only to glance at him when she is in his domain to know.

Admiral Adama could never do anything to endanger his duty and responsibilities to the Fleet. But Bill is another matter entirely. Bill enjoys having Laura around more than he would ever tell. His biggest concern is only that sooner or later there will be no more books for her to read. By that time he’ll have to puzzle out another reason for Laura to stay in his quarters. And that was exactly what he intended to do.

Drabble #4

She had always known there was little she could do in CIC to help - close to nothing, if she was honest with herself. At first, being there was another way to prove she was President in more than name. The insecurities of those first few months had been lost since lost.

Logically, that meant there was no need for her to visit CIC so often anymore.

Logically.

Logic played no part in why she appeared in CIC with greater frequency as time passed. In fact, there were only three other places on Galactica she visited as frequently: ward room, infirmary and Bill's quarters; the latter being solely due to the convenience of his quiet office.

Truthfully.

Except that it wasn't. Just as CIC was not only the place of power and control but also Bill's place. He spent just as much time standing in the center of the darkened room as he did in his quarters, if not more. And just as with his quarters she wanted to belong there, strove to deny the sense of being an intruder and out of place in his world. She needed to understand it and by extension another part of what made up the man that was Bill Adama.

With time came knowledge of monitors, maps and navigation. She learned to project confidence and look as though she knew what was happening around her. But through it all, Bill Adama remained a mystery. Just as she thought she had him figured out, he once again did something to alter the picture she had of him. At times she felt as if she would never truly belong in the military atmosphere of the CIC. But something….or rather someone always drew her back.

Sometimes she wondered if Bill ever had similar thoughts about her office.
