A prolonged wail rose from the basement of the old house.

Dean Winchester paced the length of the devil's trap on the living room floor. Back and forth, his long strides unconsciously followed the pattern of intersecting lines. "How long is this going to go on?" He asked the older man.

Bobby Singer sighed, stepping to one side to let Dean tramp through. "Hang on, let me look it up in my demon detox manual." He started to open a book piled on the sideboard, then slammed it shut. "Oh wait. No one ever wrote one. No telling how long it will take. Or even if Sam will survive this." He shook his head.

Dean cursed, rubbed the back of his neck and stalked once more across the floor.

Below, before the heavy, bolted door to the salt and iron "panic room," a silent figure appeared. Castiel looked at the door. His original orders had been to free Dean Winchester and somehow stop Sam from starting the Apocalypse. He glanced to the ceiling, weighing the old orders against the new ones he had been given. He considered his shoes, thinking of the young men and the choices they had made - and of a conversation while children played innocently nearby. He sighed as an incredible weight settled on to his shoulders. He touched the door and it opened.

The tall man was shackled to the simple, metal framed bed, moaning in pain. He opened his eyes as Castiel walked to his side.

"Cas?" he whimpered.

"Sam," Castiel acknowledged.

"Why are you here?" Sam gasped as a spasm shook him. "Are you -- are you going to help me?"

"I am here to bring you peace." He laid a gentle hand on Sam's forehead.

Upstairs, Bobby and Dean argued furiously as the signs that pointed to the End of Days gathered faster and faster.

"If Sam dies, he dies human!" Dean shouted.

When the reverberations of his shout died - the two men were aware of the silence below them.

Dean beat Bobby down the stairs.

"Sam!" Dean wailed. "No. Oh, God, no! Not again!"

Bobby paused in the doorway as he saw Dean doubled over Sam's body. The sad man in the grey trench coat stood to one side, watching them.

"What did you do?" Bobby shouted.

"I have brought him peace." Castiel's voice was calm.

Dean shot to his feet, grabbed Castiel by the collar and shook him. "Why?" he screamed. "Why?"

"Behold, the first shall be the last and the last shall be the first." Castiel wheezed a little in Dean's grip. "Lilith was the first of Lucifer's followers. She was the final seal, but she could only be killed by the first of Lucifer's new followers - the last child of Azazel's blood."

"So, you've stopped the Apocalypse?" asked Bobby.

"I fear I may have only delayed it."

"You son of a bitch." Dean released Castiel.

"You swore to serve God and his angels." Castiel reminded Dean as they returned to the living room.

"Screw you! You said I could stop the Apocalypse!" Dean was shaking, tears running down his face. "Leave me alone!"

Bobby hung up the phone. "That was Rufus Turner. There's been an earthquake in Ilchester, Maryland. Ground zero was a convent that legend says was violated by Azazel."

"Then it has begun," Castiel sighed. He laid his hand on Dean's shoulder. "We have work to do."

Dean started to object, but he and Castiel vanished in mid-syllable.

Bobby got on the phone; he had work to do as well.
