So -- how many instruments do you need to be musically fluent in before it's considered showing off?

Depends on the environment.

Like concert hall versus school auditorium?

More like the company. If you were going to a music school it would take more than say, your average highschool I think.

Oh. Hmm. Well, I do go to a music school, but I focus on composition, mostly. So I really only need piano skills.

Then there are two other questions. A) How many instrments is the average. You'd have to get two or three beyound that before it's showing off. And B) Are you lerning them to show off or just for fun?

A) Most people know the guitar and the piano, both of which I know. I started off on the clarinet, so that makes three for me, and given the at I know the clarinet, I can also play some other clarinet relatives -- the bass clarinet, and I could probably pull off the oboe if I really tried. Which is normal for most classically trained musicians. A flutist can also try her hand at the piccolo and vice versa.

B) I think I'm learning for fun. I mean, I want to try something new musically. Violin -- it's kind of like a guitar, but it's not. There's something really -- classy about it.

So, okay, most likely not showing off.

And I didn't know that about instement families. But then I only play the piano.

Have you ever wanted to branch out a bit? I mean, I love the piano, but there are so many things to try out there.

I never really have. I mean I always want to learn new music. But I really love the piano. It's.. .for the ages.

I can understand how someone would want to branch out though.

I think it really depends on what I'm playing and why. I mean a lot of the contemporary pop was made for a piano or guitar. But when it comes to playing something like the score for Jurassic Park, the clarinet gets all the fun parts.

I have to say I'm not a big fan of pop. I'm a classic rock fan. And classical. . .and a lot of stuff that usually isn't pop.

Well, when I said contemporary pop I meant popular music. I'm not a big fan of pop either. Actually? I'm a huge Queen fan. And Poison.
