Rory was sitting next to Jess on the sofa as they watched a DVD. Truth was she had no idea what it was, or even who’s choice it had been. Occasionally she noticed that there seemed to be a guy dressed up as a pink rhino, and some songs…
She just couldn’t shake what was on her mind, though. She needed to just come out and ask Jess about Friday night dinner, but the words never seemed to escape her lips. She always faltered and wound up asking something about the weather. Jess must have thought she was going crazy. If she wasn’t crazy already.
She just wanted it to go well. She wanted it to be what it should have been the first time, not that disaster with his black eye and Rory being a bitch. And she had been… she’d been two steps away from Kathy Bates in Misery, probably willing to break Jess’ ankle if it kept him in place.
A small smile tugged at her lips as she thought about the fact it had all come down to a swan. Not a football in his face, and not a fight with Dean. A swan. Jess would kill Luke for telling Rory the truth. She looked over at her boyfriend and Jess shifted to wrap his arm around her. He smiled as he turned to look at her and pressed a kiss to her temple.
Maybe he knew. He knew that something was on her mind, but he hadn’t asked, or pressed her about what was going on.
That just made it worse. It still meant Rory was going to have to be the one to bring it up. But if she just opened her mouth and said, then she’d be free to worry about the other thing.
Warming her mother up to the idea of marriage.
Rory wasn’t so sure it was ever marriage that was the problem. It was timing, and whether the right guy was walking with her down the aisle. Why her Mom had married her Dad in Paris she will still never know other than it was an attempt to heal the hole Luke had made…
Rory leaned into Jess and drew her feet up onto the sofa as she tugged on her bottom lip with her thumb and forefinger. And if Luke and Lorelai did get married, what did that make her and Jess? Her face scrunched up as she let out a disgusted noise.
“What?” Jess asked, suddenly confused, given the lack of entrails and blood on screen.
“Ew, no! No, no, no!” Rory replied, still not filling him as she hid her face. “Oh, gross!”
“What?”
“We’re going to be related!”
“What?!” Jess still had his arm around her, but he looked like he might let her go unless he got some kind of explanation.
“If Luke and Mom get married, aren’t we cousins?”
Jess blinked and looked down at her. Something seemed to go through his mind and he just smirked. “Well, this is a small town.”
