Because of you I find it hard to trust not only me, but everyone around me//Because of you I am afraid ~Kelly Clarkson
Five years was a long time. In five years, everything was different. Larry was different.
But the way it felt to dance with her in his arms, that hadn't changed. The curve of her back as his hand moved against it hadn't changed, nor had the feel of her chin to his shoulder. Her scent was so familiar, the feel of her hair against his skin, and the way her eyes looked when he couldn't help but stare. It was all the same.
Except that it wasn't. His heart and mind weren't at war upon looking at her. The confusion and frustration that once boiled through him constantly no longer did. He was able to dance with her, and just enjoy the moment for what it was. Two old friends running into each other when least expected. He hadn't even been sure what brought him to the event full of lawyers as he wasn't practicing anymore, but he was there. She was there.
He wasn't completely distraught when her date asked to have her back. He let her go, something he had been so unable to do ages before. He quietly moved across the room to say goodnight to his friends, then walked out the front door.
Hands in his pockets, he started walking to his car. He thought about her and how beautiful she had looked. He thought about everything they had been and everything she hadn't let them be. He remembered the pain he had felt in the last moment he saw her, and the steps he took to move on from it.
The truth was, he hadn't. He had learned how to be happy with what he had. He learned to enjoy life and pay attention to the moments that were happening, instead of those that had already been. He had dated, some more serious than others. Despite it, though, he wasn't perfect still. He had let her and the possibility of them go a long time before. He had cared for women since, but he hadn't trusted himself to love again. He couldn't and wouldn't do that. His love was reserved for his family. For his best friends. It didn't mean he was unhappy. Not at all. He just wasn't going to go there again. He'd had enough heartbreak for one lifetime, he didn't want any more.
