Earlier today UPS Worldship would not open on my shipping computer. OK fine; I'll use a preprinted label and call for pick up. One box, not so bad. Still not opening later in the day. A simple un-install, re-install should take care of that. When the computer "rebooted" a black screen with the dread phrase cannot load windows because of a missing or corrupt file \windows\system32\config\system
Breathe, walk away, have a cigarette or three. Go to other computer and google away. (Actually I use dogpile but that's not important right now.) Microsoft has a lengthy document on how to solve problem using recovery command. Fine. Find XP setup disk. Boot from disk. Select recover command. Even go so far as to get c prompt. The problem is that it never gave me the chance to put in my admin password and therefore I am not allowed to do any of the things that Microshaft has told me to do. Access denied all snarky and black and white. I have a call into my BIL who is in IT for real as opposed to only pretending like me.
Any suggestions not involving a brick, crowbar, or hammer would be appreciated. I would really prefer not to have to re-install XP as it would format C drive and I'd lose all my files. Most of them are backed up as it is my older, more likely to die, and less used computer but still in all there are probably a few of the files that I would prefer not to lose.
