Summary: Adelle joins Claire on her birthday.
On Claire's birthday, Adelle buys a bottle of wine and bouquet of pink roses. The flowers go straight to her office. The wine she saves for later. She knows Claire doesn't have plans-she never has plans-and this year Adelle is going to change that.
Adelle knocks softly on the Doctor's office door, and Claire glances up in surprise. "Ms DeWitt..."
Adelle holds the wine up in front of her as an offering. "Thought you were in need of some birthday cheer."
Claire gives a slight smile. "That's very kind of you."
Adelle shrugs and takes that as an offer to enter. Claire clears her desk and pulls up another chair. Adelle's brought glasses. They sit.
Adelle notices the flowers she'd given Claire in a vase on the mantel. "You like them?"
"They're beautiful."
"I've always preferred pink roses to their red counterpart. There's something...subdued about their beauty, almost as if they're trying to conceal it." Adelle brings her glass to her lips. "They remind me of you, actually."
Claire blushes and takes a sip of her drink to hide it. "And the red ones are you, I suppose? Confident, assured; they know they're gorgeous and are eager to show it off."
Adelle chuckles lightly. "If you like," she concedes.
Silence falls and they stare at each other for a long time until Claire looks away.
"Well," Adelle says, aware she's make the other woman uncomfortable. "A toast." She lifts her glass and waves it around in front of her as she speaks. "To you, Claire. May you enjoy the rest of this birthday and the many more to come."
Claire gives a small nod and smile in embarrassment. They clink their glasses and drink.
Claire glances at the roses in the vase. She imagines she can see them flowering.
