There’s shattered glass and it cuts my hands (notice? i don’t notice). So now there’s blood, and it’s so red, and it glints and shimmers and the mirror was supposed to break, small into a million pieces so it doesn’t work anymore, so why is it still showing me things I don’t want to see and why is everything so RED?!

I see it, I see it all. I broke everything (everything’s broken) but I can still see. There’s me, and if the mirror’s broken then so am I, but the mirror wasn’t broken (was it? maybe it was) so why was I still little pieces crumbling to dust? There’s nothing left, everything dies (except him)(i destroy it all) so why am I still here? Or maybe I’m not. Maybe these little bits that make up me don’t equal a whole person anymore (but can’t i be a half?)

My hands hurt.

Edward, why did you leave?

“You have such beautiful hair,” Alice commented as she pulled the brush gently through Bella’s long locks.

Bella laughed quietly. “This coming from you,” she said wryly.

“I mean it,” Alice said. “It’s so thick and rich, and the most gorgeous colour brown. Mine’s all short and spiky and annoying. I would kill to have your hair.”

Bella smiled softly. “Thank you,” she murmured.

The two fell back into companionable silence as Alice continued to put through Bella’s hair.

“How is everything?” she asked shortly. “I feel like I haven’t been able to get you alone for the longest time.”

“I know, I feel the same way,” Bella said. “And everything’s been going well. Things seem to be... looking up.”

There was a smile on her face as Alice said, “I’m glad.”

“Me too.” Bella then turned to her. “What about you? How are things going with everyone?”

“Good, they’re going good. I think Jasper’s finally adjusting a bit better. He seems happier, too.”

“Oh, good. That’s great that Jasper’s going better.”

“Yeah, it is.”

After awhile, Alice asked, “How do you want this?”

Bella just shrugged. “I don’t know, you decide.”

Alice looked thoughtful a moment before gathering Bella’s hair into her hands and beginning to braid it. When she was done, the two girls sat looking at their reflections in the mirror opposite.

“Wow, it looks really good.”

“I think this style suits you.”

Bella turned around to hug her friend. “Thank you, Alice, it’s amazing!”

Alice laughed. “It was my pleasure.” She kissed Bella softly on the cheek and hugged her back. She was glad for any time she got to spend with her best friend.

Prompt: Retribution

There are few words to describe monsters such as I. Soulless, hideous creatures who hide from the sun. I am evil. I am disgusting. I have killed people before. Often without thought, without feeling as I suck the blood from their bodies. Held their still beating forms in my arms and I drain them dry, take the life from their eyes, feel their bodies go cold and stiff in my embrace. I have this, time and time again. I am despicable, scum of the earth.

So here I am, and I will be here for eternity. I do not sleep. I will receive no solace for my sins tonight.

The Twilight Twenty-Five
Prompt: Soft
Pen name: just_drifting_6
Pairing: Mike/Jessica
Rating: PG

It’s the first day of elementary school and you’re scared and nervous. Everyone is so big and you’re so small. But then there’s a girl, and she’s talking to you.

“Hi, my name’s Jessica.”

“Mike.”

She smiles; sweet and her cheeks are so chubby and there’s this life in her eyes that’s so vibrant and alive and you know, straight away: there’s something special about this girl. So you let her take your hand and lead you away because you’re still new and scared, but school could be so much easier with her by your side. From then on, the two of you are inseparable. Best friends, and it doesn’t matter what the other kids say about you.

By middle school things have changed a little. Girls hang out with girls and boys hang out with boys, you learnt that a long time ago, but you always thought you and Jess could fight that stereotype, could win and it didn’t matter what everyone else did. But now it does. That unwritten code becomes law, and you sometimes see her across the cafeteria or on the way home from school and she’ll smile and wave, but that’ll be all. And besides, she’s changing. She’s still got traces of the chubby little girl she used to be, but now she’d much rather stay in gossiping with her girlfriends than roll around in the mud with you, which is perfectly fine and you make do. Besides, Eric Yorkie is a much better footballer than her.

And then high school comes and she’s changed so much you barely recognise her. She wears makeup and revealing clothes and where others notice her newfound beauty, all you see is the young girl with pink cheeks and sparkling eyes. All through middle school she ignored you, but now she seems closer than ever before. She sits beside you at lunch and touches you when she doesn’t need to. You don’t understand until Lauren Mallory whispers in your ear one day, “Jessica likes you.” So you try to ignore her as much as possible because you just don’t see her that way.

And then along comes Bella Swan, and she’s new and exotic and it becomes a competition which you fall into all too easily. You notice the looks of hurt and betrayal on Jessica’s face as you follow Bella around like the lost puppy you are inside, but you ignore them. Jessica’s a strong girl, she’ll be fine after awhile.

Bella doesn’t last long. Edward Cullen sweeps her off her feet and you can’t compare to that. You tell yourself it’s fine, that you didn’t really like Bella that much anyway, and it is, you are. You go back to your friends and Forks High returns to what it was before Bella Swan arrived.
After graduation, you all split up. It’s overwhelming, knowing you’ll no longer see these people you’ve known your whole life. You’ll keep in touch, of course, or so you say, but it’s still different, and it’s still more than a little scary. You and Jessica end up at the same college, and in this new, frightening world, you find you turn back to the one piece of home, of stability and comfort, you have left. And you find you like it. A lot.

You haven’t fancied yourself in love with many girls, the only noticeable one being Bella Swan, and though you never went out with Bella, you find yourself comparing her to Jessica. You find that Jessica is soft, where Bella was hard and angular. Bella always had this air about her, as if she were above you, better than you, but there’s none of that with Jessica. She’s open and loving and she never looks down on you. And that’s where you find that Jessica hasn’t really changed that much since the two of you were friends. She’s still kind, and she’s there for you when you need her, and she’s protective, and just like she did that first day of elementary, she leads you through college and makes sure you’re not scared or nervous. She still laughs too much and dances instead of walks. Her cheeks are still chubby and her eyes still sparkle. She’s still the same girl you knew, and now you’re not afraid to say love, because she’s deserved it. She’s still special.

“Ahh!” a shrill scream rang across the meadow. “Don’t, Mike. I’m not kidding. Get it away from me!” Jessica screamed again and jumped out of the way as Mike waved a stick at her.

“C’mon, Jess, it’s just pond-weed. Nothing to be afraid of.”

“It’s gross.”

Mike laughed but obediently dropped the stick to the ground. “Okay, then,” he announced to the group, “Who’s coming in with me?”

“In there?” Eric asked hesitantly, nodding toward the pond they were all crowded around.

“It’s all covered in moss.”

“Smells bad, too.”

“Don’t do it, Mike,” Angela said. “It’s dirty. You could get sick.”

But Mike wouldn’t listen, he just shook his head. “Fine, if no one with go with me, I’ll just do it alone.” So with that, he took a deep breath and dived.

Don’t you get it, Bella? Don’t you understand it at all? Before you, my life was dark. So dark I couldn’t see and I just stumbled along, pretending it was enough. Now you’re here and it’s like there’s this overpowering light that’s shinning down from the heavens. Or, no, it’s not from the heavens. It’s coming from you. Just your smile makes me glow inside and when you touch me it’ like you’ve lit this fire within. So now that you’re here, my life isn’t dark anymore, it’s bright and I can see the way. I know it’s with you.

“Bleh!” Jessica spat, spitting out the lolly that was in her mouth. “Ew, who gave that to me?”

“You didn’t like it, Jess?” Eric teased, grinning at her.

“You try it, Eric,” Jessica shot back. “See how you like it.”

So Eric took a lolly from Mike and popped it in his mouth. The others all watched him closely as he rolled it around in his mouth and sucked on it. Slowly, his face began to change. The cocky grin fell from it and his mouth pursed. And pursed, and pursed some more. Quickly, before more than a minute had passed, he spat it out.

“That thing is sour, man!” he yelled.

“Little Eric couldn’t handle the big scary lolly?” Jessica asked.

Eric glared at her. “No one can. It’s too sour.”

Just then, Mike called out across the cafeteria, “Hey, Cullen!” He waved at Edward and motioned for him to come over.

“Mike, what are you doing?!” Jessica hissed under her breath.

“I want to see him try,” Mike replied. “He won’t be able to and it’ll be embarrassing.”

Jessica rolled her eyes and sat back in her seat. “Fine, do what you like,” she said.

Edward approached their table warily, Bella behind him. “What do you want?” he asked.

Mike held the packet of lollies out to him. “Do you accept the challenge?” he asked in what he hoped was a commanding voice.

Edward glanced back at Bella, who looked nervously at him, then shrugged. “Yeah, okay.” He reached into the packet Mike held out to him, took one and popped it into his mouth. Everyone held their breaths in anticipation as they waited for Edward’s face to change.

They waited.

And waited.

And waited.

And waited.

And nothing happened. Edward kept the same passive, slightly annoyed expression on his face until he opened his mouth to show the lolly was gone and asked, “Is that all?”

Dumbfounded, Mike could only nod his head. Edward gave him a weird look, then took Bella and walked off.

After awhile Jessica turned to Mike. “Is there anything that guy can’t do?!” she said.

He doesn’t touch me anymore. I don’t know what I’ve done, how I’ve destroyed this thing we have together, but I have. He looks at me with contempt and turns away when I reach out. My embrace is met with tension and he shoves me off quickly. I try to get through to him, but he won’t let me. He doesn’t want me anymore. I try to hide the pain I feel. My tears fall only when I’m alone. I put on a brave face and I act like it doesn’t bother me.

It does.

He doesn’t touch me anymore.

Stop. Stop! I mean it. Stop it. Stop it now! Don’t come any closer. I’m telling you. Stop. Don’t come closer. Don’t! I’ll hurt you. Believe me, I will. I’m a hair puller and I haven’t cut my nails in months. You watch out. Stop right there, and I won’t hurt you. Are you asking for this?! It seems like you’re asking for it! Well, I tell you, you don’t want it. It’s not nice, believe me.

Please stop. Please. Please. I’m scared, okay? Yes, the tough girl was all an act. You’re scaring me. I’m claustrophobic and you’re closing in around me and it’s terrifying so just...back away. Stop now and we can still be friends. You’re very pretty, I like you a lot. So, if you stop pressuring me, I’ll still like you. And you want that, don’t you? You want me to like you. After all, I do live in this room, and it’s my responsibility to look after you, and if I don’t like you, then I won’t and you’ll get yucky and dirty. Which would be bad.

So just back off now. We’ve been talking civilly, haven’t we? Let’s keep talking and not...pressuring people, okay? Okay? Do you hear me?!

I TOLD YOU TO STOP IT! Please. God, I’m so scared. He’s gone and now you’re here and you’re pushing and shoving and I can’t move and I’m so cold and you’re so heavy and overpowering and I can’t breathe! Stop. Stop. Stop. Stop.

Help me.

Help.

“AHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!” Bella screamed as she ran at Edward. “I’ll get you!”

Edward jumped onto a log. “Halt!” he called. In his hand was a stick and he pointed it at Bella. “I have the magic wand! Stop where you are or I’ll curse you!”

Bella stopped obediently but she said, “What will you do to me, Edward? You can’t hurt me.”

“I can,” Edward said. “I’ll put a spell on you so you can’t sit down!”

“Can’t sit down?” Bella cried. “But if I can’t sit down I won’t be able to eat dinner and mommy will be mad and I’ll get punished!” Her face broke and she started to sniffle.

“Which is why you should stop there,” Edward told her but Bella started to cry harder. “Bella! It’s just a game.” It was no use. “Okay, I won’t put a spell on you. I promise. Look, I’m putting the wand away. I won’t hurt you.” He dropped the wand to the ground and held his hands out.

Suddenly, Bella lunged forward and grabbed the wand where Edward had dropped it. She jumped back before Edward could grab her and held it out warningly. “Stop right there, Edward Cullen,” she said. “I have the magic wand now, so you are in my power.”

“That’s no fair, Bella,” Edward whined, taking a step towards her. “I was being nice to you and you turned it against me.”

“That’s what you get,” Bella said and she poked her tongue out at him. “Now, because you disobeyed my command I have no choice but to curse you. Abracadabra, alacamit, make it so this boy can’t sit!” she cried as she swirled her hands around and aimed the wand at a helpless Edward. “Haha, Edward, you can’t sit down!”

Edward glared at you. Then he said, “Just because I can’t sit, doesn’t mean I can’t run.” He grinned evilly. “I’m going to get you back, Isabella Marie Swan. You’re going to wish you never cursed me, and then you’re gonna take it back.”

“Nuh uh,” Bella said.

“I’m coming for you!” Edward yelled. He leaped up and started running towards her. “You better ruyn, cause I’m gonna getcha.”

“Ah!”

Turning on her heal, Bella fled.
