Author’s Notes: More Time Agency, and yes, yet another huge chapter! I’m not sure what’s gotten into me here. Anyway, I have to thank my marvellous beta 2nd_toshiko for just being so darn supportive, as well as all you lovely people reading this; I honestly appreciate it all so much! I really hope that this is all working out the way you want it to. And yes, of course any comments you are kind enough to give me make me such a happy writer, and are so greatly appreciated! :)

Chapter Five A

“Well the good news is you’re not going to bleed to death....” Owen grinned softly, administering a small patch the cut on Toshiko’s palm. He tapped it quickly, bursting the inner seal, chemicals searing out under the material and swelling deep into the cut. She grimaced, feeling the cold liquid sting as it entered beneath her skin.

“It was nothing worth seeing you about.....” Tosh replied quickly, peering at her hand so that she could hide behind her hair, avoiding looking him in the eye. “Honestly.....my tutor, he sent me here.”

“I’m glad he did.” Owen paused, handing the tray of tissues and empty packaging to the nearby nurse, who efficiently tipped it all into the incinerator at the other end of the room. “It might not have been dangerous, but it was still a nasty cut.”

“It was my own fault. The laser cutter just slipped.”

“Concentration somewhere else?” He replied innocently enough, whilst Toshiko didn’t dare admit how true his statement was.

“You could say that.”

“Well be careful.” Owen nodded softly, typing something out furiously on his keyboard beside her. He gave her a gentle glance, looking around him to make sure there was no one else there. In barely two minutes, he was printing off a small slip of microfilm, letters indented into the plastic like Braille. “Now this....” He handed Toshiko the small piece of film, pressing it into her good hand. “Is instructions for keeping that wound clean ok? I’d read it very carefully if I were you.”

“Now?”

“No, not now. No point.”

“Why.......?”

“For a clever woman you don’t half have your stupid moments.” Owen laughed, waving his hand indicating for her to leave. “Now dismissed cadet. You can get back to your training.”

“Yes sir.”

Toshiko left the pristine white room quickly, the microfilm cradled in her hand. She was curious, if not confused by the way Owen had acted. Obviously he couldn’t have flirted with her, or made any public displays of anything. But she had expected him to have acted far more distant, like he had been in the bar, not in the light hearted way he had seemed back in the medi centre. He didn’t make sense to her, however many times she tried to analyse and cross examine him. Owen was an enigma, a conundrum with no obvious answer. She certainly was not used to that.  Toshiko shook her head, feeling utterly confused as she leant against a wall, curiosity getting the best of her as she finally lifted up the micro film to read the words printed across it.

‘Tosh,

I’m glad I saw you today, though be honest, you didn’t go cutting yourself just to see me so soon did you? Of course not, but it’s driven me mad not being able to say anything other than medical things to you. Are you busy tonight? I was hoping that you and me could meet again, maybe break some more rules? I’ll be at Poseidon, usual time, usual place. See me there, ok?

Oh and Tosh? Don’t get all worried on me now. Some things are worth taking a risk over.’

She knew it was pathetic, but Tosh really couldn’t help but smile, holding the piece of film to her chest, keeping the words close to her heart. This had to mean something right? It had to be a sign that what she was doing wasn’t so wrong didn’t it? Well, not wrong for them anyway, although in the eyes of TARA it always would be, the concept of breaking the rules still a difficult one for her to swallow. She sighed, realising that she would have to dispose of the microfilm as soon as she could in case anyone else found it. But just for that brief second, Toshiko was content in clinging onto the only remainder she had of the night before. And the only taste that she had of the night to come........

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There was something oppressive about the air surrounding the firing range that morning. The light was dim, clouds blotting out most of the sky in a canvas of grey, throwing random shapes and shadows out across the grass. Nothing was as colourful as Ianto remembered it, the apple grass a dimmer green, the shining walls of TARA around them more of a silver than the pristine white he could see in his mind’s eye. Yet it atmosphere was still warm, humid and uncomfortable, clinging to the tunic of his uniform. Ianto sighed, pulling it off to expose the white under shirt he wore underneath, folding the discarded garment carefully before placing it beside his kit back on the floor. Jack had done the same, and after a considerable amount of arrogance concerning his physique, he had finally begun to shoot and stop talking.

Ok.... so maybe Jack Harkness had the right to brag about some things. His shooting, for one Ianto had noticed, was beyond comprehension anyway. Or at least to Ianto Jones, who could only watch the flurry of bullets in shock as they each met their mark, a bulls-eye in each of the five targets set out in front of them. Then again, looking at the targets was providing Ianto with an excellent opportunity not to look at Jack, or the way his black trousers hugged his hips so perfectly, the sleeves of his undershirt cutting tantalisingly across his bicep....

“Not bad right?” Jack laughed, turning round to throw a quick smirk at Ianto as he reloaded the gun..

“I’ve seen better.” Ianto jumped, tearing his eyes from his body and back up to Jack’s face, preying that he hadn’t noticed. He smirked, stepping forwards impatiently. “Do I get a go now?”

“Think you can beat that?”

“I can try can’t I?” The younger cadet laughed, taking the gun from Jack and positioning himself in front of the target.

“Well start off easy eh? One target.”

“Fine by me.” Ianto shook his head before slowly raising his right arm. He took in a deep breath as he looked down the sights and aimed his shot, trying to forget about the arrogant eyes that he knew were watching him. In an explosion of noise and power, throwing his arm off kilter slightly from the shock, the bullets leaving the barrel, and hurtling towards the target. Each of them hit, not all dead centre like Jack’s, but still towards the middle of each target.

“Aw bad luck.” Jack grinned, typing something into the keypad of his wrist strap. There was an abrupt beep, before an image of the target appeared magnified in front of them both tinted by the blue of the projector within his wrist strap . “A little too high I see.” He nodded, pointing at where the bullets had landed above the bulls-eye.

“Close enough though right?”

“I doubt it.” Jack shook his head, replacing his smug smile with a more serious one. “If that was a head-shot, you’re guy would be still breathing and ready to shoot back.” He paused, switching off the image in front of them before returning his gaze to Ianto. “Let’s try again.”

“Excuse me?”

“The gun. Reload it.” Ianto nodded, unsure about why he felt like he had to obey Jack, his hands moving on their own whilst his brain still worked through what was happening.  As he did so, the other man positioned himself behind the him,  so that his head was looking over his right shoulder, his chin barely resting on his arm. Ianto dared not breathing, the scent of fresh pheromones already at his nostrils in the thick and heavy air. “Now, it’s all in your stance.”

“That’s what Sergeant Jaxx told me.”

“The man knows what he’s talking about.” Jack smiled, sliding one arm around Ianto’s waist to position him sideways on to the target, whilst pressing him backwards closer into his body. Ianto felt his other arm slide upwards towards his neck, turning it to face the target, the rough skin sending shockwaves through his own. “Now, raise the gun.”

“I’m not too sure about your teaching methods....” Ianto managed to say, words barely as mumble as he tried to stop them catching in his throat.

“Well I am, so don’t worry.” Jack replied, his voice thick as his hands left Ianto’s torso and neck, guiding his right arm into position. His breath was tickling against Ianto’s ear, voice soft as he continued to give his orders. “Your legs are too far apart Jones....”

“Wh....what?”

“Your stance. Feet closer together.” Jack withheld a laugh as Ianto shuffled into action, moving his legs closer together, his cheeks flowing more scarlet with every passing second, beads of sweat begin to dangle from his brow. “Good....” The older cadet mumbled softly, before sliding one hand across Ianto’s bicep. “Not so high up ok? The higher your arm is , the less strength you have to control it.”

“Ok....”

“Now....” Jack slid his hand back along Ianto’s arm before letting it rest gently on his shoulder, the other hand moving down the curve of his torso and onto his hip. “When you’re ready, hold that stance and fire.”

He surprised himself. Gulping and trying to ignore the body contact so warm next to him, Ianto took in another deep breath, squeezing down the trigger of the gun as he exhaled. As soon as the loud noise finished, he looked to the target , laughing when he realised that every one of his own bullets had hit dead centre.

“I’m impressed...” Jack laughed, not releasing Ianto’s body from his grasp. “I really am.” His voice low, the older man bent his head, pressing a soft kiss to the exposed skin at the back of Ianto’s neck, shivers rocketing down his spine. Every cell in Ianto’s body reacted, quaking from the touch, writhing and pleading with his consciouness.

“Jack.....”

“What?” The grip around his body tightened, hands pressing the other man’s lust into his skin.

“We talked about this.”

“And?”

“You shouldn’t be-”

“Doing this? Why?” Another, longer kiss this time pressed against his skin, followed by another, the rough sensation of teeth gently dragging against his skin. “Do you want me to let go Jones? Really?”

“Jack, I want......”

“Well look who it is.” A strange voice sounded behind them both, cutting Ianto off. He jumped in Jack’s arms, wriggling to get away from him slightly, as Jack in turn let go of him and turned round, arms folded. “Am I interrupting something here Jack?” John Hart smirked, letting his eyes wander over Ianto, causing him to blush further.

“No.” Jack rolled his eyes, giving a quick glance over to the flustered young cadet before returning his gaze to John. “What are you doing here?”

“The same as you, practice....Although....” He raised an eyebrow, staring at Ianto. “I think I’d fancy you’re definition of “practice” more there Ianto.”

“You wish.”

“Indeed I do, it’s a free galaxy after all.” John laughed, turning his attention back to Jack. “I’m hurt though, you could have invited me too?”

“You had training.” Jack said bluntly, his lip curling slightly.

“Never stopped you before now has it?”

“There was nothing to invite you to.”

“Oh yeah.....really looked like a whole lot of nothing from where I was standing.” John laughed, eyes locking with Jack’s, completely oblivious to Ianto’s existence anymore. He had never felt so discarded.

“Jack.....” Ianto found himself saying quickly, shaking himself from staring at them and stooping down to retrieve his kit bag and tunic. “I’m leaving.”

“Jones.....”

“Leaving so soon eye candy?” John winked, stepped forward and letting his grey eyes rest on Ianto’s face, taking in his own blue eyes, soft skin and defined jaw. “We could have some fun....”

“Eye candy?” The words left Ianto’s mouth like a curse.

“Yeah. What? Nicknames not allowed between friends?”

“I am not your friend John.”

“You haven’t given me a chance yet.....”

“Enough!” Jack stepped forward, pushing John aside so that he could speak to Ianto. “Just shut up for a second alright?”

“Oooh dominant...-”

“Ianto.” Jack cut in, ignoring him with a roll of his eyes. “You don’t have to go.”

“No....I want to Jack. I have work to do.”

“You sure?”

“Positive. I....errr....thanks for the help.” The younger cadet ran a flustered hand through his hair, already backing away. “I’ll see you around ok?”

“Sure.” Jack sighed, watching him retreat back across the grass. He shook his head, turning back to John, fixing him with an angry look. “What the hell did you do that for?”

“Do what?”

“Go all territorial. I know what you were doing.”

“I was trying to make new friends, not my fault that pretty boy wasn’t playing nice was it?” John smirked, before eyeing Jack suspiciously. “What’s it to you anyway? I thought you’d given up on him?”

“He’s my friend.” The words left Jack’s mouth of his accord, yet he still felt sheepish saying them.

“You’re kidding me?” The other man laughed, punching his arm. “There’s no way you can pull that off!”

“Why not?”

“You mean apart from what I just saw? You’re completely different people Jack, face it....you have nothing in common.”

“And how do you know that?” Jack was almost spitting now, his fists clenching up into tight balls, his head caught in between the twin sensations of wanting to simultaneously kiss and beat John right then and there.

“Because I know you. You and me are the same, remember?” John softened his smirk, letting it pass into a smile as he continued to look at Jack. “Take it from someone who knows, this isn’t going to work. Either fuck him or move on Jack....”

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

‘Let’s be friends’. What a great idea that had turned out to be. I’ve been so stupid, why did I ever think that any of this would actually work? There were currently a whirlwind of thoughts flying through his head, and Ianto Jones could barely even slow them down enough to be able to compute them. He didn’t know what to think right then, everything was all so confused and illogical. He didn’t know whether to loathe John Hart or thank him, for if he hadn’t stumbled across them when he did, who knows what could have happened. He had felt it again then, with Jack’s arms wrapped tight around him, those intoxicating lips on his skin. He had remembered how it had felt on his first night, the same feeling that he was falling, that no matter how hard he tried he couldn’t stop the wave of desire rushing through him. He’d found himself thinking about letting it happen too, wanting to keep that feeling there, not caring about how short lived it might be. He couldn’t deny it...he wanted Jack, despite his efforts to hide behind his offer of friendship. He was strong, he knew that, but faced with this he felt so uncertain, so conflicted. But in the face of all that, Ianto knew that he had to stand by his principles, resist and not give in. Jack didn’t need another fuck, he needed a friend, needed someone who was separate from all that, and Ianto would be damned if he was going to let some petty lust and desire strip him of that.

He shook his head, tired of all the questions and uncertainties. As he walked, he found himself staring upwards towards the heavy sky, noticing how deep and dark the bellies of some of the clouds had become. It was going to rain, a heavy thunderstorm to dispel all the humidity that accumulated around TARA and was currently choking the city. Ianto smiled, looking forward to the rain, heartened by the rumble of thunder that echoed through the heavens above him. He couldn’t help but hope that somehow the rain would wash away some of the lust, some of the tension between him and Jack, throw it from the air in the same way that it would cast out the humidity in the atmosphere. If only that would happen, then their friendship might stand a chance to face clearer skies.....

*Does usual hiding thing* Ok then, so another long chapter, and a lot of both Janto (ish I guess) and Towen. Yay! But yes folks, if you have gotten this far, please leave me a comment. It keeps me scribbling this story as fast as I can for you all, and I adore your comments so very much! I really love to know what you think to the characters, the plot so far, anything that you liked or even possibly wasn’t too keen on, it’s all feedback that makes writing this so much more enjoyable. So if you have chance, feel free to scribble something down. :) Thanks!
