OK, so we have an EMC SAN that we found out a month or two ago, wasn't off-lease but actually Paid-for. This is a good thing.
My plan is to use this SAN to host storage for Backup EXEC - "Backup to Disk" since we are now, finally, sending tapes off-site to Iron Mountain instead of my basement.
I clear out some of the old storage groups on the EMC and create raid groups, assign them to LUNs, assign the LUNs to storage groups and from the EMC the storage is ready to go.
I then unmount the Backup server, install the Fibre card and the server doesn't even recognize the new hardware as an unknown device, it's just like it's not there. I download and install the drivers and they don't find the card either something's uncool...
So I unmount the server and double check, the card isn't properly seated. That would do it. Rebooting shows the device, not even as an unknown device because I've already added the drivers. Good.
I get on the fibre switch and zone out port 11 to both storage adapters on the EMC array, run Fibre and get the worldwide number from the switch to map the Worldwide number to the storage group.
Everything should be good to go after a power down/up of the backup server.
Disk management shows two disks (of appropriate size) as unknown & unreadble.
I go through and check mappings and zonings and they are all good. I'm stumped and it's 2:00pm on Friday and I'm leaving work early to go home and clean so I'll deal with it monday especially since nothing is coming up from google...
So I poke and I prod and nothing seems to matter. Then I find a random google thread... Someone with a similiar problem had the luns set (in his case) to the second storage adapter on his EMC instead of the first. Hmmm, don't we have a bad Storage Processor?
I tresspass the LUNS from Storage Processor A to Storage Processor B and reboot the backup server. NOW the luns are showing up as unformatted disks!!!
I'm very happy to see I understood everything I was supposed to do and just missed the fact the EMC array thinks that the BAD storage processor is good and since it doesn't have any LUNs assigned to it auto assigned my two new LUNs to the faulty SP.
Now I have to go neaten up the fibre cable I had hanging out until I knew I was fine.
