He snapped out of his reverie to salute the approaching man. Peering at his uniform, no rank was displayed; Special operatives didn't wear them, it would give away rank in case of capture.
"Sir, you don't have the clearance to come in here."
Even if he was high-ranked, it made no difference. He had been given a very specific list of names.

Forcing a veil of calm around him, he saluted back, allowing the annoyance to creep onto his face. You are a soldier, you will not allow yourself to lose control.
"My identchip -- " It was held out for inspection, " -- proves that I am a senior officer. As you know, I cannot reveal my mission to you, but it does involve using the terminal inside that room. It is vital and you have no right to countermand any order I've received."

He scanned the identchip. Captain Xhylar Teeg, not even from this carrier.
"And your name is not on the list, so you don't get in."

Aeryn knew people like this. He wouldn't budge unless he thought it would go well for him. Always someone else boot-boy, he resented those in charge.
So Xhylar smiled. "Then we shall make a deal, as equals, you and I. Forget station, forget rank."
He took the younger boy gently by the arm, drawing him aside. Then he told him exactly what he wanted to hear, waiting for the distraction, waiting for Jaina.
