Xhylar got past the second security checkpoint with relative ease. Several jokes were made concerning his 'friend's' absence, but he took it like any good Peacekeeper with a sneer and air of nonchalance. It was the problem with Peacekeeper security, once you were in, movement was easier than you'd expect. Keep your eyes straight forward. Don't look ( Read more... )

He had won no medals for bravery. You didn't get put on door duty for being a war hero. But he was alert and he would prove to everyone that he had what it took. One day they will see.

He snapped out of his reverie to salute the approaching man. Peering at his uniform, no rank was displayed; Special operatives didn't wear them, it would give away rank in case of capture.

"Sir, you don't have the clearance to come in here."

Even if he was high-ranked, it made no difference. He had been given a very specific list of names.

Testosterone. Aeryn knew now why some men snapped in the heat of battle. Just being so close to victory and to have this frelling nerfer in the way. He knew instinctively he could snap his neck with his bare hands. But that wouldn't get him anywhere.

Just another arrogant member of the 'big boy's' club. And you think I'm going to let you in here?

"But you see Sir, I am allowed all the jurisdiction I need to defend this door."

He scanned the identchip. Captain Xhylar Teeg, not even from this carrier.

"And your name is not on the list, so you don't get in."

"What is this an exclusive club on a pleasure planet?" Xhylar growled. It would be so easy to pick him up and break him.

Aeryn knew people like this. He wouldn't budge unless he thought it would go well for him. Always someone else boot-boy, he resented those in charge.

So Xhylar smiled. "Then we shall make a deal, as equals, you and I. Forget station, forget rank."

He took the younger boy gently by the arm, drawing him aside. Then he told him exactly what he wanted to hear, waiting for the distraction, waiting for Jaina.
