Myungki is about to press the doorbell when the door swings open, revealing Jinki’s eldest daughter - she is sporting a smile that could rival her father’s. His youngest daughter pushes past her less than a second later to exclaim, “Come see our Panda!”
The kids all quickly disappear inside the house, leaving Jonghyun and Kibum chortling on the Lees’ doorstep and giving Jinki, who had been hoping to invite them in before the girls could take care of it, quizzical looks.
“We bought a black and white hamster, they named it Panda,” he explains. Kibum smiles knowingly, aware that their ex-leader hadn’t wanted pets before but it looks like his daughters have swayed him. Kibum can relate. Besides, Jinki’s daughters are so sweet it’s no doubt whose kids they are.
“You brought the beer?” Jinki asks. Kibum gestures towards the crate Jonghyun is holding, adding a pointed, “I picked it, of course.”
Jonghyun is quick to reply, all too used to Kibum’s taunts. “Kibum still likes to pretend he can drink.”
“And Jonghyun still likes to ignore that he can’t,” Kibum counters at once, smile turning sly as he looks to his lover.
“I’m driving,” Jonghyun says, sounding dejected and somewhat failing to hide it.
“Of course, honey.” Kibum leans in to peck his cheek, and as predicted it does a good job of returning Jonghyun to his good mood.
“Come on in!” Jinki’s wife calls out from where she’s setting the table. Kibum goes off to help her in an attempt to be a good guest, not so much for Jinki’s sake but for hers. He adores her, mostly because she never fails to snap at her husband when his jokes become too lewd. She is exactly the type of person he had imagined their dear leader settling down with, and now they have two lovely daughters to show for their love.
“Who’s bringing the cake?” she asks in between handing glasses for Kibum to place at the table.
“Taemin,” Jonghyun tells her, pausing slightly before continuing with a small smirk, “if he doesn’t forget it.”
Kibum has moved on to straightening the chopsticks by the glasses when Suhyun comes up to him with what appears to be a very big, fluffy ball of black and white fur clutched securely between her small hands and her chest. She shows it to Kibum who, even from close up, can’t figure out its head from its tail and wonders if Jinki unknowingly bought a guinea pig because that is one puffy hamster.
“We should have brought Juliette!” Suhyun says. Now that would have been a very bad idea considering their puppy would have probably chased the poor creature all night and knocked down everything in Jinki’s home with her awkward, growing adolescent pup body. Kibum struggles for a moment over how he can adequately explain this to her without upsetting her too much but all that comes to mind is that four and soon five kids in one small house is enough trouble already. Jonghyun would surely appreciate the joke, but he doesn’t think Suhyun would so he settles for: “Sorry sweetheart, she isn’t trained yet and I don’t know if they’d get along well.”
“Oh, ok,” she says, looking down wistfully at the wriggling ball of fur in her hands, “when Juliette’s older can we introduce them, then?”
She looks so hopeful that Kibum doesn’t have the heart to tell her that hamsters usually only live about two years, so he just forces a smile and says, “Sure.”
Pleased, she smiles back and scampers off to join the others again.
Jinki already has his first beer uncapped by the time the others arrive, making for a rather crowded kitchen. Still, they manage not to step on each other’s toes too much - a skill they had perfected while living in dorms together - and soon the table is set and the food is ready. Minho keeps a playlist of all their songs on shuffle throughout the evening; behind closed doors, he’s unashamedly sentimental and proud like that. The others go with it because even if they’ve heard them a million times already, the memories they hold are worth it.
Taemin doesn’t forget the cake, in the end, and someone pitches a joke about aging in reverse and his apparently improving memory. The cake is chocolate-flavoured to the kids’ delight, and as soon as their plates are empty they disappear into the living room to try out the video games Minho’s girlfriend’s son had brought. There’s a tight feeling in his chest, squeezing his heart when Kibum peeks into the room and sees all five of them squeezed together on the couch, reminding him at once of how he and his members used to do the same thing what still feels like yesterday. With a private smile, he helps the others clear the table so that they can commence their usual round of poker. The stakes are low, mere coins; none of them are playing for the money, rather for the company.
Throughout the evening, Kibum loses more than he wins even though he should be at an advantage considering Taemin still can’t bluff to save his life and considering he can practically guess Jonghyun’s hand just by looking at him. He blames his losing on having to divide his attention between focusing on the game and keeping an ear on the living room. Occasionally, he has to shout out a cautionary “Boys!” whenever he can hear Jinki’s girls whine that they aren’t playing fair.
Suhyun eventually finds herself fast asleep in Jonghyun’s lap, having climbed there when watching the older kids play had gotten boring and when her father’s chest had seemed like the perfect place to rest her drooping head. Jonghyun has an arm wrapped loosely around her while he uses his free hand to deal cards and Kibum doesn’t think he could be more in love than he is in that moment. Funnily enough, he’s sure Jonghyun will prove him wrong yet again and rise to the challenge in the days to come.
