Drift - Prologue
“You’d like it here, Jjong.” Kibum’s voice was soft, almost frail and Jonghyun didn’t like that.
“Yeah?” he asked brightly from the other end of the phone line connecting him to his best friend. He wanted Kibum to talk, just talk, partly because he missed him and partly because he wanted to make sure the frailness in his voice would go away by the time he hung up.
“Yeah...” Kibum agreed in a murmur. “It’s really warm and sunny - and the sea is clear. There are kangaroos everywhere once you get out of the city,” the younger boy added with a chuckle that was slightly scratchy due to the transcontinental connection.
“Hmm,” Jonghyun hummed, a small smile stretching his lips. “It’s good that you’re over there then, ‘cause it’s snowing like crazy here, and well, you know, you’re allergic to snow and all.”
Jonghyun could barely make out the low chuckle Kibum gave. Both boys fell silent after that.
“I miss you,” Kibum confessed in a small voice after a while.
“I know, Bummie.”
“It’s not SHINee if there’s no Bling,” Kibum added, and Jonghyun could hear his smile through his words. It was the elder’s turn to chuckle lowly.
“How’s Taemin doing?” Jonghyun asked quickly, wanting to turn the conversation away from its previous subject. Besides, it wasn’t a secret that he was rather fond of their maknae.
“He’s good. You know, he can hold that note almost as long as you,” Kibum teased, to which Jonghyun mumbled something unintelligible: the younger boy had only been able to make out the words “that kid”.
Jonghyun could hear other voices nearby through the receiver.
“Have to go?”
“Yeah,” Kibum said, in English, and sighed. “I’ll call back later, alright?”
“You don’t have to,” Jonghyun simply said, because it was true.
“I’ll talk to you later, then,” Kibum replied with another smile in his voice. “Rest.”
“Mehrong,” Jonghyun chided playfully. He didn’t like being treated like a child, yet he would still act like one.
“Mehrong, idiot,” Kibum reproached affectionately.
Jonghyun listened to the dial tone for a while before hanging up.
