I remember when my dad caled to tell me that my aunt Mary had secretly gotten married to local celebrity Casey Coleman. I wasn't suprised, she had divorced her last husband whom I met only once and he failed to impress me, even though the radio mogul clearly impressed himself. The first words that came to mind was trophy wife... My aunt Mary is beautiful, she has the Ross eyes and pale flawless skin, her hair is a pale blond and always perfect. Even after the birth of four daughters her figure has still never shown it. I never judged Casey, and dare I say I liked him. I was never into football, and he was the "Voice of the Browns", to me he wasn't a celebrity at all. He was a guy, who came to christmas and told jokes, sometimes good and sometimes bad. He was the guy that would knock on an unlocked door, poke his head in and say "burglar!" But it became increasingly apparent to me that my aunt loved this man very much and he felt the same. He was okay in my book. He has two daughters, one reminds me of me, and the other of who I would have liked to be. One is a little more carefree, the other is enrolled in Akron for dance much like I was, she is very studius, I wish I had been more like her.
Almost two years ago my uncle Casey was diagnosed with pancriatic cancer. He and my aunt fought it together. He was cancer free after months of chemo and surgery. The Cleveland media and my aunt Mary organized a fundraiser for pancriatic cancer. Part of the proceeds would go to helping pay the many medical bills they had. Shortly after the fundraiser Casey's dr's found more cancer. It was inoperable and in June they gave him six months. He fought hard. He and my aunt renewed their vows in september, and that was the last I saw Casey. His health deteriorated fast, Gabe and I got very sick the week of halloween. I ended up in the hospital for the night. I was unable to take my son to see his uncle. The week of halloween my aunt spoke to the family, Casey's health was rapidly deteriorating, he had stoped seeing family.
My dad called me at 6am and told me that Casey had passed away at 3am. It hit me with great sadness and relief. He was no longer able to speak or close his eyes. I know that it's not how Casey wanted to spend his time here. I am greatful that I had him in my life as little as it may have been. Today the head coach for the Browns gave his condolances. While Romeo knew them less than the other coaches he said it simply and the best. "Casey was a genuinly good guy". Simple as can be. He is a great guy and will be missed by our entire family and it is safe to say much of Cleveland.
A genuinly good guy
