Race Wrapup - Tri For Fun Sprint 1

Jun 11, 2008 16:41

I did my last triathlon almost six years ago.

If you've been my friend for that long, you are probably still trying to forget when I begged, then badgered, you for money (I was training with Team In Training and they had a fundraising requirement). If you were my friend back then but are no longer reading this blog, you probably removed yourself from LJ (and possibly left town) because of said badgering.

This time around, I'm training on my own (but feel free to donate to my "cause" if you're feeling generous). I started about six weeks ago and I just finished my first race (a sprint distance) this last weekend.

The "Tri For Fun" was held in Rancho Seco Park, a little bit southeast of Sacramento. The weather was gorgeous - partly cloudy, low-60s to mid-70s air temperature, and a cozy 70 degree water temperature. The course was a 0.5-mile swim loop, 16-mile out & back bike, and 3-mile dirt path run loop.

Highlights:
  • 2:04:22 finish (not too far from my target 2 hrs)
  • zoom-zoom-ed on my bike (even passed people going uphill :D)
  • sang on the run (headphones were prohibited :P)
Lowlights:
  • getting lost in the swim/bike transition (I stood looking stupidly around for my bike for almost 2 minutes)
  • strong headwinds on the bike, in both directions
  • getting lost in the bike/run transition (I stood looking stupidly around for my spot again, but this time for only 1 minute :D)
  • cramps in both calves for the first quarter mile of the run.. quads felt left out and joined in the party later :P
Overall, I'm happy with how the sprint tri went. I had fun and it has definitely helped me identify several things I can do to improve my performance in future races. Donations would help too (I accept cash, personal and travelers' checks.. thanks!).

tri, race
