In times of trials one learns who the important people in his or her life are. I may disagree with some choices those around me have made; yet I do not turn my back on them. My hope has been to be extended the same courtesy, yet life obviously does not work that way. This week I have learned a great deal about friendship.

Life is amusing in a way. You can make difficult choices, act on impulses, all on your own accord, yet life always finds a way to balance itself out. Yin and yang. It is being in a crowded room of people and feeling so alone; it is having good news and no one to share it with.

When I was five, I was determined to learn how to tie my own shoelaces. No matter how hard I practiced, instead of making bows all I could manage to create were knots. After hours of trying, I would crawl into my bed and cry my eyes dry. My mother would find me, eyes swollen, snot dried along my upper lip. Gently her hand would soothe my back as she sang to me.

I cannot think of a time when I missed that more.
