Ok, so we forgot to actually to into Waterville, but Colby was cool. Casey's first deal there was at 1:30, so we went to Freeport, Maine to shop. It's like mega shopping heaven. The best part, of course, was LL Bean. We hit all three LL Bean stores, the outlet, the retail store, and the hunting and fishing store. I bought a piece of luggage and some warm stuff for Casey. Yeah, well, some other stuff too. So, we're having lunch around noon and Casey says, Dad, how long to Waterville. I ask the waitress who is from there and she says 45 minutes and I'm like so we have lots of time. that's when Casey says, Dad, we have to be there at 1:30 and I say, I thought it was 3 something.
Well, we ate quickly and left the restaurant at 12:30. Ten minutes to get to the car and find out way out of town and we are on the road. Well, it's taking a while and the minutes are ticking by. So, I'm going faster and faster and Casey is getting angrier and angrier. I manage to avoid the state police on two occasions and as we are 15 miles away and its 1:15 I'm hauling ass. I look down and the speedometer is on 90 (it's a Ford Mustang, give me a break) and the gas gauge is on RED. About that time the low fuel light comes on - and its now 12 miles to go and when we get there I have no idea where the campus might be. So I tell Casey that we will probably run out of gas anyway, so not to worry about being late.
1:27 and we are off the exit ramp and there is a COLBY sign - go right. We go right. Shortly there is a COLBY sign pointing left. Some poor kid in a crappy foreign car is in the right lane with his left blinker on trying to follow the COLBY sign, but I don't' car. I swerve around him and into the turn lane and catch the light. The fuel gauge is now below RED and I can smell fumes - but we forge on. 1:32 and a few more turns and there is the campus! We see the Admissions building and a group of people crossing the road - all of them have the same umbrella - its been raining for the past 10 miles - and there is a guy walking backwards - THE TOUR - shouts Casey. So, I screech around the corner and throw her out to catch up, whilst I park in a faculty only lot and catch up.
Then we went on the tour and Casey had her interview. Now, the problem is that I'm stuck in this parking lot in the middle of nowhere with absolutely no gas. So, I go to the nice lady at the reception desk and say, "where is the absolutely closest gas station." Well, as luck would have it there's a kid there from San Antonio, Texas with a real cowboy shirt on and Tex gives me directions. The old lady - and I mean oooooold - at the desk marks a map and says, "now be sure to stay left right here (pointing). I had a moment's hesitation at the critical juncture, but went left and the rest was pretty much down hill and we coasted into the a gas station.
Well, at that point I forgot to go to Waterville, which was in the other direction and we headed back to Freeport, cause, like, there was more shopping to do. I drove safely on the way back, so there. We went to this really funny place called the Musty Moose and got some funky Maine stuff and then we got some other stuff and then we went to dinner and a lady was singing and a guy was playing piano and the waitress looked like Claire (Mary's niece) except she was not a good waitress, but I drank some wine. Then we did more shopping and now we are back a the hotel and Casey is tailing to mom.
Colby is cool. Its more structured than, say Hamilton. The location is good, the campus looks a lot like a typical New England liberal arts school. There is a good government program with interesting people. So, in the final analysis, Colby and Hamilton look good, Rochester is fine and Hampshire SUCKS (what a bunch of FREAKS).
So, now ends our college tour. We head back tomorrow. Casey has been really fun to be with. Today was a lot of fun, especially. Its been tiring and long, but fun.
Casey is cool.
