Hamilton College Update

Jul 07, 2004 21:50

Casey and I are now in Northhampton, Massachusetts getting ready for our visit tomorrow to Hampshire College. Hamilton was a very nice visit. The campus is very quiet right now, but the tour guide was very energetic. Casey was interviewed by the associate dean of admissions and their talk apparently went well. They were out for about an hour and we were a bit late for the tour. The dean was very nice and fairly direct. Hamilton was founded in 1812 as an all male college and in 1965 Kirkland College was founded as a women's college. The two were merged in 1978. Hamilton was a traditional, liberal arts college and Kirkland was a very open curriculum emphasizing the arts. The merger joined the two philosophies into the current fairly open curriculum. There are very few requirements other than writing and a senior paper. The college emphasizes written and oral communication and has a strong emphasis on the arts.

Hamilton is just on the edge of Clinton, New York, a small town in the middle of nowhere. Clinton is a sleepy little town with a few stores and restaurants. Otherwise, the area around Hamilton is farm country. Utica is the closest major city, but its not that big. But, there is a decent size mall for all of the major shopping needs. Syracuse is about 45 minutes away and Rochester is about an hour and a half.
