Lia stood in front of the NEWS office feeling rejuvenated. The feeling of accomplishment was still lingering on her. She turned the doorknob and smiled widely.

“Ohayo Gozaimasu!” She greeted the men in the room. They greeted her back.

She made a mental count of the number of people inside. On impulse, she also checked her watch. It was only 8:15 am.

“Lia, is me being early, so shocking to you?” Yamapi asked.

She slowly shook his head. “No. Of course not. I was just, surprised. I thought I was late.”

“Pi, she made you the benchmark of tardiness.” Ryo informed the young leader.

This time she shook her head vigorously. “No! It’s nothing like that! Don’t misinterpret anything!” She sincerely didn’t want to offend Pi. It was a huge improvement for him to be on time. Heck, he was even early. This calls for a celebration!

Yamapi chuckled at her reaction. “It’s okay. I am surprised myself that I am this early.”

She let out a relieved sigh as she made her way towards her seat. Both her seatmates, Tegoshi and Shige nodded at her. Somehow though, she felt something was amiss.

She shrugged it off as she opened her laptop and proceeded with her daily ritual of checking her mails. She needed some files from one of her clients; she hoped that they had sent it already so that she can start with some of the testing.

She scrolled down her Mail Inbox. She found the file she needed and immediately opened it. After checking that they sent the correct file, she saved it to her Client folder. That will be for later.

Next, office mails. She continued to scroll down as she saw a mail from Manager Tackey.
She double-clicked the mail to read it.

Dear All,

This is to remind you of your upcoming 2-week intensive Training in Taipei starting this Wednesday. Please note that I will not tolerate absence from any of you. Kindly inform your respective clienteles that you will not be available to answer their immediate concerns during this period.

This is an important activity that has been determined by Johnny Kitagawa himself during a meeting with leaders from the International Business sector. You will not only be representing the firm, but our country as well. I hope that you will actively participate in this event and continue to enrich your knowledge and experience through this training.

Your flight is scheduled tomorrow afternoon. HR has already processed your papers. I shall meet you tomorrow at my office for any additional reminders.

Regards,
Tackey

Taipei… training…tomorrow….flight…

These words kept flashing through Lia’s mind before she got hold of herself, looked up from her monitor, and screeched, “We’re going to Taiwan???”

She stood up from her chair. “I can’t believe this! We are going there? I’ve never been to Taiwan. Fair enough, I have never been to any other country except my own and Japan. But still, Taiwan?” She paused for a bit and grinned widely. “I’m thrilled!!! No, that’s an understatement. I’m exhilarated! This is so exciting! And I’m going with you guys, which makes it a trillion times better.” She sat back down and squirmed in her seat.

This was her first official international trip with her teammates. And though they might be working from sunrise to sundown in Taipei, they could still squeeze in some time to visit some places there. Even a few hours would do. She took slow deep breaths to steady her pulse. She was getting too charged up.

She snapped her fingers as she remembered something and turned to her left. “Shige, what’s the normal temperature in Taipei now? Would I need to bring a coat? Or something lighter?”

Shige looked at her weirdly. “I’m…I’m not sure…”

She beamed at him. “It’s okay. We can always check it at the internet.” She shouldn’t have burdened Shige with such nonsense. He was not a weather reporter afterall.

She got the attention of someone who might share the same excitement like she did. “Massu! What foods are we going to eat there? Any suggestions?”

Massu smiled at her slowly though his eyes looked ready to cry. “Xiao…long bao…”

“What’s that? I have never - “

“I CAN’T TAKE THIS ANYMORE!”

She looked at Kei who snapped at their conversation. She lowered her head in embarrassment. “Gomenasai…” She mumbled softly.

Out of sheer happiness, she forgot to consider that they were working.

“I’m truly sorry…I didn’t mean to disturb anyone… I’ll keep my mouth shut - “

“It’s not you Lia-chan. I wasn’t referring to you.” Kei faced her looking really distressed.

Yamapi cleared his throat. “It’s about the training Lia…” She looked at him eagerly.

“You can’t come with us.”

With mouth agape, she let the words slowly sink in as leader continued.

“This has been decided before you even came to work with us. They only made reservations for six people from K&A. We thought that this wouldn’t push through since we haven’t heard from Manager Tackey since then. We just found out today that it is scheduled this Wednesday.”

Oh, so that’s why he was early. They must have been talking how to break the news to me. She suddenly felt embarrassed with her initial reaction.

“Ahh! It’s okay! For real! I understand. I mean, I must have gotten the email since it was addressed to all NEWS members…” She tried to explain.

“Why can’t she come with us? We can all pay for her expenses to attend the training.” Ryo intercepted. She could sense that they were considering that option.

“Woah! Nobody is paying for anything. Besides, it was meant for all six original members. I’m a staff loan remember? I don’t think I count as -“

“YOU are one of us. Don’t you dare say otherwise.” Ryo snapped at her. His cold glare was enough to freeze the Sahara.

“I’m just saying it’s not a feasible course of action Ryo - “

“Fine. If they only made enough for six, I’ll have you replace me in this training.” Shige suddenly suggested.

Lia turned to her left to face him. “Are you out of your mind? Am I supposed to pretend to be Kato Shigeaki?”

“You don’t have to pretend Lia. You are going there as yourself.” Shige explained.

“I still say no. I mean, there’s a huge chance that at least one training there would focus on International Law or Civil Code. How can I even participate in that? They need you there.” She tried to reason out.

“If Lia-chan won’t go, I won’t go.” Tegoshi declared.

This time, she turned to her right. “Tego-nyan, that’s absurd. As the email said, they will not tolerate absence from any of you. Do you want to get berated by Manager Tackey?”

Tegoshi though for a few seconds before replying. “I don’t care. I won’t leave you here alone.”

“I am not a toddler! I can handle myself. Don’t worry about me.” She gave the youngest her most reassuring smile.

“Why can’t we do something for Lia-chan? Why can’t she come with us? Why can’t - ?” Massu trailed off. He had the most heart-wrenching expression on his face.

“Everyone, please… Stop acting as if I’m going to die. You’ll be gone for a few days. And back here before you know it.”

“But…you…alone…” Massu continued.

She let out a huge sigh. “I’m going to be fine. I can handle solidarity. Just go there and enjoy, okay?”

They knew there was nothing much they can do. It was pointless to even make something big out of this. With a defeated stance, the rest of the gang decided to let the topic go.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Knock. Knock.

“Sumimasen…” She gently excused herself in front of Manager Tackey’s office.

“Come in.”

She looked at the same room where a few moments ago, her teammates had been. “Lia, please have a seat.” He was busy signing some documents that as he motioned for her to make herself comfortable. She did as she was told and went to take the sit across the manager’s table.

When he had finished what he was doing, he looked up to face her. “How are you doing Lia? Did the sent off to the airport went well?”

She smiled at him as she remembered how Tegoshi refused to let her hand go. She had to assure him that she wasn’t going to leave Japan anytime soon. The rest of the team was obviously distressed, and though she felt the same, she refused to let her teammates see it. She didn’t want to burden them. She kept reminding them to bring her omiyagi or else she wouldn’t allow them to set foot in NEWS office ever, to which they promised that they will.

“It’s okay. They’re safely tucked inside JAL, I guess.” She answered.

“You’ll be on your own for the next few days…the guys are worried about you…” Manager Tackey started.

“Oh, there’s nothing to worry. I mean, I’ll probably be staying most of the time at the client’s site.” I’d rather stay there than NEWS office. The silence was going to kill her.

“You’re fairly new in this firm. Plus the fact that we capitalize on teamwork means that you should have one or more people lurking behind your back from time to time. I know it will be hard on you.” He continued.

“I understand your concern Manager Tackey, but I will be fine. I will continue to do my best even when those guys aren’t around.” She assured him.

Instead of immediately replying, he took out something from his desk drawer and handed it to her. Though confused, she picked it up and read aloud.

43rd Business Consultancy Symposium

The pamphlet showed a listing of schedules and activities. Pictures of a few business tycoons were shown, as well as a list of company sponsors.

She looked at him as he explained. “Since the rest of the team is going on training, your leader thought that it is only fair that you should go on one too. Yamapi has already guaranteed your attendance.”

Silence.

“Huh?” was the only logical reaction she can think of as of the moment.

“Because of the time restriction, we weren’t supposed to send a delegate to this event. But since you can make it, I think it would be a good opportunity for you as well.” Manager Tackey informed her. “By the way, training starts tomorrow. The company chauffeur will take you there. Okay?”

She continued to remain silent before slowly nodding. “Yes, Sir.”

Pi,

Subject line says it all. Why am I being asked (correction: guaranteed to attend) this Symposium? Have you even read the pamphlet? Only eight topics are related to my field. The rest are all your expertise combined.

Why are you letting me attend all of it? Let me emphasize on a critical word there. ALL. Meaning everything. EVERY SINGLE ONE of them.

With all due respect, are you insane?! Or do you have a hidden grudge on me? Explain yourself Pi.

On the side note, how’s Taipei? Hope everyone’s doing fine.

Lia ^^,

She did not even proofread her mail and just hit the Sent button. She was still shaking at the idea that she alone has to face a training designed for everyone in the team. Chances are she will die from it. A very bloody death will ensue.

Lia,

Relax, will you? You are going to attend this seminar while we are here doing the same. It’s all for us, not just you. Think about it. You can take notes on what you have learned and then share the knowledge to us. The same thing we are doing here (yes, there are a few updates to those reporting standards you have mastered).

And no, I don’t have a hidden resentment on you. How could I possibly hate ‘Amazing Lia’? =)

So enjoy the training. It’s much better than sulking in the office and realizing how much you miss us. You know you do. He he he.

Everyone’s doing fine. A bit grouchy out of jetlag. But we’ll survive. Talk to you soon. We have to get going.

Take care.

Pi

She read the young leader’s email early that morning. The mail was sent at 6:23 am. She guessed they must be really busy if the normally late leader was up at that time.

Though she was a bit scared as to how she will fare out in this Symposium, she knew she had to do it. She has to give it her best as well. She was no longer working on her own. She has a team that she will not let down.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Lia searched around the venue for today’s training.

So this is what Roponggi Hills looks like.

She has always thought that it was where expensive shops and apartments were. She didn’t know that there were even areas for business meetings in this place.

She arrived early for the first class. She took the time to observe her fellow delegates in the Symposium. Some were familiar faces from the Anniversary. Very few were around her age. So far, she hasn’t seen any other female attendees.

Her attention was suddenly caught by the woman with short black hair who just walked in wearing a long black coat over her tapered jeans. Though she still had sunglasses on, her delicate features still showed. Lia continued to stare in awe as she noticed that she looked as though she was looking for someone. She shook her head, looked at her watch and went towards the Registration table. In one fluid movement, she went from the table and took the seat a couple of feet away from her.

Wow. So pretty.

Lia snapped out of her admiration and found herself slowly making her way towards the lady. Lia stopped in front of Ms. Pretty.

“Uhm, Hi!” Lia greeted cheerily.

The woman looked up from her seat.

She’s even prettier up close.

“I’m Lia. You have no idea how happy I am to see another girl at this training. I hope you don’t mind if I - “ She chirpily introduced herself.

“Eh?” was the only reaction she got from the woman. She has a deep voice for a girl though.

Lia wanted to explain herself fully but was halted when the woman’s cell phone suddenly rang. Lia watched as she excused herself and found herself alone amongst the sea of delegates making their way inside the room.

LIA-CHAN!!!

How are you doing? Us? We’re okay. Though we feel as though we are missing one more person in the group. Yup. That would be you. =)

Taipei is a bit sunny compared to Tokyo. We didn’t have time to go out today. As you can expect, most of the people here are Chinese. We fail in that language, except for Shige. But we have interpreters in here so it’s alright.

Nothing much to report. We’re still pretty much the same. We just want to update you.

Missing you a lot,
Yuya =)

Lia smiled as she read the mail from Tego-nyan. It made her feel good that they were okay. Contrary to her. As expected, she’s pretty much alone the entire day. She had seen the same girl but she was constantly surrounded by four other guys in the Symposium. Lia haven’t summed up enough courage yet to talk to her again, not with those other people around.

Tego-nyan,

Glad to know everyone’s good. Me? I have good news and bad news. Let me start with the good one first (spoiler, I know). I found a female friend in the symposium! Yup, it’s true. After being exposed to testosterone-filled environment for some time (no offense), I have finally met one of my own kind. Yipee!

I was so happy that I went up to her, hastily introduced myself and declared my happiness at meeting her. That’s where the bad news come in. I freaked her out. Totally understandable reaction. I mean, I would freak out if I was in her position.

Sigh. There goes my female friend. I plan to apologize to her tomorrow. But she’s always with her four male groupmates (I assume that’s what they are).

Anyways, please keep tab on those updates for the IFRS. I’m keeping notes on the ‘In-depth Analysis of Japan’s Stimulus Package’ as of the moment.

Ganbatte!

PS Btw, why are we copy furnishing everyone in the group? (Just a harmless question. Peace.)

Lia,

I was one who booked your attendance. Attendees are various groups from different Consulting firms in Japan. Except for you, there are NO other female delegates in that symposium. I’m positive even the speakers are all male specimens.

Perhaps you were hallucinating? I heard from Tegoshi that the mind can make you perceive things that aren’t really there, if you want it that badly.

During their afternoon break, Lia continued looking at the woman who was idly munching on some crackers. She felt like a stalker by what she was doing. But she was looking for the perfect time to talk to her. She doesn’t want to scare her off again. Once she saw that she was alone, Lia quickly grabbed the opportunity and faced her again.

She immediately bowed. “Gomenasai. I’m sorry about last time. I didn’t mean to frighten you or anything. I’m harmless. I assure you.”

Silence.

“Hyung!” She heard a voice call over. “It’s time to go.”

Lia looked up to see that the woman was no longer there.

Lia,

I know someone who has a roster of all Consultancy groups from firms all over Japan. Based on your description - one girl and four male groupmates - there was no match found. Neither did the name (both first and last) Yung, Yun, Yuna or Yu.

I’m sorry to break the news to you.

I am not insane. I need to prove my innocence once and for all.

The thought kept lingering on her mind as the 3rd day of the Symposium progressed. She was still keeping notes as she promised, but her mind was constantly floating around in an attempt to find ways to prove she was not having a sanity relapse.

“Ms. Montez? Is there anyone here with that name?”

Lia snapped her attention back as her eyes widened in realization that the speaker called her. Hesitantly, she raised her hand and answered, “Here.” As she was sitting in the back row, the other delegates turned around to face her. Talk about unwanted attention.

“Ahh, I’ve heard so much about you…” The foreign speaker, a stout man wearing black suit, with a protruding beer belly threatening to pop out, looked at her with fixed eyes. “…the recent Anniversary was regarded highly by the Finance Minister. He’s a very good friend of mine, you see…”

Lia felt goosebumps as she remembered that the Finance Minister also tried to make a pass at her in the party. It was a good thing that Ryo’s scowl was enough to keep the old man at a safe distance. What troubled her now was the fact that the speaker was friends with that man. There’s a huge possibility they share the same affinity for girls who were thrice their age.

“Thank you Sir, but it’s a group effort. My teammates are hard-working and brilliant people I have the good fortune of working with.” She answered back confidently.

The old man smiled at her in an alarming manner, “In that case, where are they?”

Oh crap. I’m being interrogated in front of the class.

“In Taiwan Sir. They are likewise attending intensive training to further their growth and that of the firm.”

“Interesting.” She heard him declare. Okay, that was definitely a scary reply.

“In that case, Ms. Montez, would you care to express your opinion on the proposal of the Prime Minister to reduce the taxes on gift and inheritance? What could be its possible effect on the economy? Would it benefit only the wealthy or Japan as a whole? What do you think should the government do then?” He asked her all at once.

EH???

Lia could feel her palms sweating and her throat becoming dry. Why ask me now?!
She looked around the room to see that everyone’s gazes were still fixed on her. Even Ms. Pretty and her four Knights (that’s what she decided to call them) were staring at her.

I can’t let my teammates down… I can’t let them down…I can’t let them down…

She kept repeating the words like a mantra. It was her only source of motivation.

After summoning all the courage she can get, she started, “In my opinion, it’s obvious that the wealthy would be on the direct receiving end in this proposal. But by cutting down the imposed taxes on their household assets, which sums up to about 1.4 quadrillion yen as of fiscal year-end, the general response would be to make use of the opportunity to spend it on assets that have a high monetary value - such as houses and cars. In this regard, the government is hoping that it will stimulate consumer spending and revive companies such as those belonging in the automotive industry. Consequently, by reviving a company that is slowly making its profit, they would need manpower to support their growth. Hence, employees who have been laid off from work will now be called back and unemployment rate will decrease…”

“Does that mean, Ms. Montez, that you are saying, that this proposal of deduction in gift and inheritance taxes, be part of the stimulus package then?” The speaker cut her off.

She looked at him directly. “But Sir, that is only one side of the whole picture.”

Lia took the quizzical look on his face as a go-signal to continue. “Japan has been reporting a budget deficit for the year. By reducing the taxes on gifts and inheritance, it will directly result to a reduction in the government’s revenue. In turn, it will increase the budget deficit even more. For Japan to raise itself out of economic recession, which is what the government hopes to achieve, it must first eradicate the deficit. And though there are many ways of doing so, the two most probable courses of action would be for them to issue bonds, which will increase government liability or print more money that will ultimately increase revenue but will also result to an economic condition we refer to as inflation. And if that would ensue, I think Sir, we are not really solving the problem, but just morphing it into a new one.”

She took a deep breath before continuing. “Therefore, the government should consider both effects and must choose the one which would favor the economic situation more. The said tax reduction is not the only solution there is. But as of now, it’s better than doing nothing. I would have liked to give a more concrete answer, but given my lack of substantial and critical information, that is all I can give as of the moment…”

“… A mere opinion.”

The deafening applause that followed brought Lia back to the reality that she had just expressed her thoughts on politics and economy to a room full of business delegates. She felt her fingers becoming numb after crossing it for good luck. Lia looked at the speaker and Ms. Pretty, who only nodded at her in acknowledgment.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

You can do this Lia! Don’t be such a coward! She kept urging herself to approach the front row where ‘Ms. Pretty and her Four Knights’ are.

Just get her name, her group’s name, possibly a picture as evidence and you can prove you are not a loony-bin.

She took a huge gulp of air and made her way towards her target. She gently tapped Ms. Pretty’s shoulder and she felt herself glued to the ground.

She just might become a lesbian for all she cares. But those were the nicest pair of brown eyes she had ever seen up-close.

She snapped out of her reverie as she noted that five pairs of eyes were now looking at her in shock and confusion.

“Hi! I’m Lia. Uhm, I’m the one who kinda assumed that we can be friends during the first day, remember?” She chuckled nervously. “I’m sorry about that. I was just ecstatic to see someone of similar gender and age after a really long time. And yeah, because of that, my teammates think that I am deranged because they said that I’m the only girl here when you are obviously standing in front of me. So if you don’t mind, I kinda need proof that you do exist.”

The four Knights burst into fits of snorts, then giggles then full pledged laughter. Meanwhile Ms. Pretty looked like she had decided to copy the color of a tomato.

“I can’t.” She told Lia.

Lia looked at her in disbelief. She refuses to think that someone THAT good-looking was a Queen Bitch. But why say no?

Lia continued to stare at her to assess the situation.

Oh no -

“Please don’t tell me you’re a ghost. Or are you a figment of my imagination? You know, I’ve watched a ‘Beautiful Mind’ so if you are one, you can tell me.” She started panicking.

Ms. Pretty furrowed her brows in confusion as Lia called the attention of another male delegate.

“Hey Sir! Excuse me. Can you please tell me whether you can see them? Can you?” She asked the young man.

“Uhm, yeah. There are five people sitting there looking at you like you grew another head.” He answered, then quickly left the scene.

She smiled gleefully. “Okay, so I’m not delirious.”

Lia looked at Ms. Pretty with narrowed eyes. “Then that means you are just being plain mean.” Lia cocked one eyebrow at her.

This is just great. Her first female encounter turned out to be an obnoxious wench.

“Ms. Montez, it’s not what you think.” One of the four knights with chinky eyes told her.

Lia turned her attention to him. “I mean, how hard could it be?! I just need her name, your group’s name and a snapshot or too. And I promise, I’ll never ever disturb you again.”

Looking again at Ms. Pretty, she said, “Please. Pretty please with cherries on top?”

She can’t believe she’s begging now.

“Ms. Montez, I can’t grant your request…” Ms. Pretty said as she stood up to face her.

“…because I’m not a girl…”

As the group’s mother, I dedicate this mail to you.

I have failed everyone in the group. I have never wanted to disgrace you guys. But alas, I have done an irreparable damage to the firm, the group and to my sense of self-worth. Do not fear, however, for you have done all that you can, to shed light into my troubled mind. I am solely at fault - for I did not heed your warnings.

You are all correct. I may have suffered a serious case of mental unsoundness. I have perceived something that was not there in the first place.

If my heart should stop beating out of ignominy that I have brought upon myself, please know that I am deeply regretful of my action, and that I only wish nothing but your continued success and happiness.

Farewell my brethren. May our paths cross again in the next lifetime.

Lia,

What is going on there? Do you have any idea what you are doing? And why are you not answering the damn calls? Where are you?

Subject: Explain yourself

Lia,

I don’t know what’s going on here. But I have six Associates threatening to come back to Japan if you don’t reply within the day. I would have shrugged it off as an unfounded peril if Massu had not threatened that he would pursue a hunger strike if I do not take action. I can only deduce that this is a matter of life and death.

For the sake of everyone’s sanity, just reply to them. I beg you.

Tackey

Manager Tackey,

I apologize for the disturbance. There had been a misunderstanding. Rest assured, I shall clarify it with them.

…although I did wish that the earth would open up and swallow me whole.

Guys,

I’m sorry for making you worry. *bows down to ask your forgiveness*
I wrote that mail under the influence of vodka. So yeah, think of it as if I never said anything. And I couldn’t answer your calls because 1: it’s on silent mode and 2: I was drunk.

Anyway, what happened to me, you ask?

Good news first…

Remember Ms. Pretty? Well, I finally got the evidence I needed.

(She’s the one next to me, my right side)

Drumroll to the Bad News part…

Turns out, she was actually a HE.

Yup, couldn’t believe it either. No, she is not a transvestite. She He (see my confusion?)
was born male. He’s just uber pretty.

To sum it up, for three days, I was stalking the guy, pushing myself to be his friend and making horrendous accusations. It was that bad.

And so, to relieve the deep-seated feeling of embarrassment, I made my way to the local bar and drank my bruised dignity away. But life wouldn’t let me off the hook that easily.
They (those in the pics) spotted me in the same bar (how small is Tokyo for us to be there at the same time, huh?) and even joined me for a drink. They said it was nothing to be embarrassed about (yeah right) and he even said it was cool with him. That only made me feel worse. I was a horrible person that accused him of being mean and he was being nice about it. In the end, I guess I drank one too many.

Next thing I knew I was being sent home by five guys into JE. Total shocker to the juniors I’m telling you.

I guess it was sometime in my drunken stage that I made the mail and accidentally hit the Sent button.

There’s nothing to worry. I’m alive. And though I don’t know how I can possibly face them again next week, I think I’ll survive. (I’ll worry facing you all when you get back)

Again, sorry about the whole commotion. And thanks for the concern. I’m touched.

Lia ^^,

PS What do you guys do when you have a hangover?

PPS By the way (from L-R in the pic) that’s Kim Junsu, Park Yoochoon, Kim Jaejoong, me, Jung Yunho and Shim Changmin. Thy said they were Koreans but sent to work in Japan. The group’s Japanese name is Tohoshinki. Have you heard of them?

PPSS I may not be able to reply soon. I think I need to rest more. And I think I’m going to puke ---

AN: This is so fun to write! I was laughing at how silly my characters are in this chapter. I hope you had fun reading it as well. =]
So yeah, I’m introducing new characters - the members of Tohoshinki (TVXQ) or in Korean, Dong Bang Shin Ki (DBSK). If you don’t know them yet, their pictures are in the left side of my LJ. Or better yet, check the internet if you want to. It’s not required but it may help should you need to imagine their physical attributes. I’m not sure yet whether they will become a permanent part of this AU or guests only. Help me decide. Please?! =)

I appreciate comments. Hugs to everyone who will. ^_______^
