So tuesday was the long sought after Talking Head show with Travis Morrison, Karmella's Game and Beauty Pill. Given that I dedicated the entire night to this concert and we had other business to care for in the city, Stu Chris and I got a head start down to B-more around 6. We made our first stop at a gas station that couldn't pump gas. Can't explain it, but it got me just enough to last the night.
Then we headed towards across the tunnel Baltimore. This part of the trip was to take care of T-Shirt orders for WMBC. The company doing the shirts is located in downtown Baltimore, Pirate Graphics. Anyway, while trying to find their office, we came upon what we thought was an illuminated Pringles sign over a building. We found it so awesome we grabbed a pic of the winking sign (hint: Pringle's guy has two eyes, so this is foreshadowing).
After that we headed towards Fells for some chill time. On the way to Soundgarden, we passed a Natty Boh shirt, at which point we realized the sign was actually Mr Boh's. Anyway, a trip to Soundgarden yielded some looks at vinyl. Originally, I was not very into vinyl, but just this past week, Stu, Wes, and myself took part in a little experimental spinning with 8 bit electronic covers of popular songs, played behind some old bible records stu found in the station, which was very awesome. I want to start some scratching attempts, but I also want to collect some good vinyl records. After some original dissapointment in the selection, I found an 8 dollar copy of Midnite Vultures. So, it becomes my second record (first is Travelling Willburys). After that, Brick Oven Pizza was had, where we managed to bump into Mr Constant Run-In, Kevin Burke. He and I shared our overnight shift experiences, and then he was on his way. We bummed around in the Daily Grind coffee place for another 30 mins or so before heading to the show.
In order to keep this entry not so length, i'll put my show review behind an lj-cut...in fact,
So, we got to the Talking Head a bit early, and to avoid pissing off the doormen, we didn't try to sneak in the crafty side entrance to the lower bar. We decided to wait till 9 to get in the main entrance, only no one came out to unlock it. After 5 minutes we mozied in on the side, which happened to be where the doorman was. When we walked in, Travis was right in front of us, but I avoided temptation to try to butter him up. So, as soon as we got in, I grabbed my first drink at a bar...wasn't really any different, but at least it's done. To my suprise, Beauty Pill was soundchecking, and KG confirmed Beauty Pill was opening the show.
So around 10, Beauty Pill hit the stage, with new singer in tow. She exuded a very annoyed attitude during soundcheck, and the show was not a whole lot different. She was a pretty good match for the old singer's voice, and the band was definitley tight with each other. They didn't play either of the two songs we wanted to hear "Won't You Be Mine" and "Such Large Portions", but in enjoyed it all the same.
Karmella's Game hit on about an hour later, with a new guitarist in tow. They put on a good show as always, but I do have to say I was beginning to see their flaws. Mostly, they're just a bit teenager geared. The other funny thing was that they drew the largest crowd by far. The new guitarist seemed to be pretty down to earth. All in all, another solid performance, just not my favorite cup of tea.
So, Travis Morrison. First of all, I saw him bringing lots of things on stage. I'm talking a full percussion set of congas, shakers, digital drums. The other drummer had a VERY tiny drum set. Then, I saw the band load about 4 or 5 keyboards onto the stage. AND THAT WAS IT. I never realized it before, but Travis Morrison's album really doesn't touch guitar. So at that point I was starting to get psyched about how the songs would turn out. I should mention the female member of Travis' crew. During the show, she kept acting real frantic, and during KG, she rushed over by where Stu and I were standing and kind've pushed Stu aside without saying anything to grab some keys. Then, as she was loading up, she pushed me out of the way, even though i was pretty much standing out of the way already. So I was kind've annoyed by that. So when he started up, I immediatley notice how animated he is on stage. The man is what I would equate to a modern day Elvis. He hip swivels, jaunts around, and sort've makes some funny facial expressions when he's singing. I don't remember him being as animated with the Dismemberment Plan, but I suppose that was due to having a guitar or keyboard to hold him down. Another great thing was that Travis varied the songs a lot. All the songs underwent some sort of change from the album version, so you got something new with each thing. While that made it harder for me to guess the songs at first, I really liked that because we got some better versions of songs. The female member was actually a bit nicer on stage, as she was playing the piano parts and having a bit of a friendly row with Travis. She went nuts on Teeth though and dince these really stupid dance moves that Stu Chris and I thought were just trying to be attention grabbing. Then, the capper was when Travis closed the show with "Goodnight, we are Travis Morrison". Yeah, so it was just as good as I thought it would be.
