How can you be "the lone rangers"; there's seven of you!?
Last night we had a dream team, of sorts. Chrysta was out of town, Eve was just getting back into town and wasn't sure about trivia, so it was just going to be the boyz (me and Mike). I asked around JSTOR during the day and found out that few if any of my co-workers were planning on attending. Mike and I talked, and we decided that we were going to carry the banner proudly and face those overwhelming odds with courage and great aplumb (which may be the same thing, I've never heard aplumb without being preceeded by "great"; can you have 'middling' or 'moderate' aplumb?).
After I got out of work, I got a call from my friend Aaron. "I hear you're looking for extra people. We're cut loose from our team, can we sit in?"
It was pretty cool. When we sat down to play we had Aaron, his lady friend Jackie, and Sam (trivia powerhouse who recently took home some big money for knowing the answer to the question "the word 'galaxy' is derived from the greek word galac which translates to what in English?" answer:milk).
Eve ended up coming, as did Stephanie - so by the time we were done, we were not only a team of geniuses we also looked good.
Trivia was fun, we had ups and downs, but we were doing fine. At the end of the night, I went up to check our score (this is about the time of night when we see that we're 10 points out of first so we get to go home before scream-out is over). We were in a three-way tie for first.
The extra category was Literature.
Before I went up to represent our team, I thought of all the wrong answers that were close to being right. What was the soundtrack to "Under the Cherry Moon?" I know! I know! Graffiti Bridge, right? Duh. Parade, featuring the hit single "kiss."
The other people we were up against were some guy and Corby. Corby is the guy that does that OTHER trivia (scream out) and will take over for Geoff when he steps down. I lost out fair and square. "What was Milan Kundera's first book?" No way I'd have known that. (It's the Joke for those who want to know if the future).
Here's where I really missed the big money though. It still haunts me.
"Who was Arthur Dent's right hand man?"
Not only did I shout out the wrong answer RIGHT AWAY. The other guy took so long to answer that I had time to collect myself and regret my answer. I had time to talk with Geoff about whether or not I could say the right answer and take back my wrong one. I had SO much time, I thought that I might have a shot at giving the right answer. It is not Zaphod Beeblebrox. It's Ford Prefect. My head hangs in shame. All the way home I kept thinking, "You sass that hoopy Ford Prefect? There's a frood that really knows where his towel is."
We got $25. It was a really hard night, Sam did most of the heavy lifting. I did walk out of the bar with the same amount of money I walked in there with and Mike got his $5 back for signing us up for trivia.
It was nice that Eve came out even though she was tired. It was fun to hang out with Sam and Aaron & Jackie. It was really great that Stephanie made it out.
Three way tie for first is not a disappointing showing.
