Problems on Every Side

So, there's this whole big deal about the Mexican border and the drug war and the illegal immigrants and etcetera, and I keep seeing various sides of it and debates and discussion, but nobody really talking about solutions. It's certainly a big, complex issue, and it's one that with each passing week starts to demand more and more attention ( Read more... )

I heard somewhere that the current mexican drug cartels started as a citizen militia fighting against the mexican drug cartels, only to fund their operations they decided to start selling drugs.

I'll hafta ask some of my Mexican friends about that and let you know. What I do know is that the current president of Mexico has HUGE balls and is the first one in a long time who's put real efforts into fighting the cartels. And they want him dead, so he's VERY well-protected and sheltered right now. He recently met with Obama and asked for US support in the war on drugs, and Obama sidestepped the issue and changed the subject. So I'm really pretty disappointed, though perhaps Obama's not very well-educated on the issue. Mexico is our neighbor, and it's people are suffering because of the people in our country. So we're kinda obligated to fix things a bit. It's Americans' demand for illicit drugs that made the cartels into a 300+ billion dollar industry. With guns. For comparison, it only costs $1 billion to build a stealth bomber - they could build 300 of them a year with the money they make off of the American people.

So, neither of my friends from Mexico who I spoke to tonight had heard of that before, but they said it's potentially plausible, just not sure about it and they think it's unlikely. Could just be a ret-con PR stunt to help them get a little more cred with people or something. The cartels in Mexico are HIGHLY political and vocal, they make announcements and spin just like politicians would.

Unfortnately, this administration is going to try an end play on congress for amnesty, and keep blaming the Republicans for not working on immigration reform, while they keep calling to close the borders. Unfortunately, people keep bringing up the cost of keeping the illegals here...hospitals in CA are on the verge of bankrupcy because of this. That and the Mexican government has been shown to be trying to get their people to come across the border for years, even to the point of printing up "How to" books. What I wonder about is that someone pointed out that for a Mexican to go back across the border, it costs something like $300 they have to pay to their Government for taxes and stuff. I wonder if the US is picking that up...? As for the War on Drugs...you're right...something has to be done about it, and I doubt that the Government is really going to do anything until the violence has spread to a border town...IE...major running gunbattle in the streets, dozens dead...wherein they can't ignore it anymore...or at least until some ( ... )
