"I was just calling to let you guys know that there is a small GI bug going around..."

May 09, 2009 10:51

That sums up my work day for the last four days. I called all family members listed as responsible parties, as well as all other local family members, to let them know that there was a gastrointestinal virus going "around Gainesville in general, and showing signs here at Summerville." Residents have been eating meals in their rooms and going crazy with inactivity (two relative terms).

I probably have gotten like 25 calls in the last couple days involving the following terms:
-swine flu!
-lockdown
-quarantine
-epidemic

as well as a few one-timers, such as :
-are the shits over yet?
-is my mom in danger of hospitalization?
-you guys are giving them water, right? I don't want to come out there and get sick.

GOOD TIMES

Activities were cancelled, residents were in need of placating.

Managers went to meetings out of town, and left me to hold the fort and field family member concerns after our one remaining nurse (the other was suspended after not doing anything to curtail or contain the virus AT ALL) went crazy and made like 900 hours of overtime.

Today is supposed to be the day when a semblance of normality returns to the building, presaging the approach of insanity known as Mother's Day this Sunday. I'll probably end up being lame and calling to make sure everything is fine :( Ah well.

We were going to go to Lake Wauburg today, and made partial plans, but the Lake is still closed for Break, which we did not try to discern in any way. Perhaps we can still go somewhere or other, but I think Max will take this opportunity to sleep late into the afternoon. We will reschedule for a weekend that seems more convenient for everyone, I guess. Most of the people I invited did not respond, and most that did responded by saying they would not be going without even mentioning why. Maybe my assumption of interest in a fun activity with me was far-fetched. It's disappointing.

Lots of other little things have happened over the last week or so, but generally they are minor or I have not finished shaping them into what I want them to mean.

May you know Joy,

Chris
