Totally agree. Ever since we learned in that episode that Sam had been followed by the demons and Azazel all his life Jess never stood a chance. This also makes me wonder how soon John found out the truth about Sam, which might explain why he moved the boys around so much, and why he always wanted them under the radar and never introduced them to other hunters besides Jim and Bobby.
As far as Dean, you and the others are right, he will always blame himself even if he is nowhere near at fault. It would have happened one way or another.
Thanks. yea, it is something I have long thought about. Because it is so vague as to when exactly John knew about Sam, this theory could really fit in with the boys childhood. All we know is from 2.01 when John told Azazel that he has known about Sam for "a while" now. That could mean anywhere from days, weeks, months, years. I choose to think years because if you logically look at it, John being the obsessive man that he was would have had to question from the start why Azazel was in Sammy's nursery, and what he was doing there. That question had to have nagged at him until he found something out. And demons being what they are under torture, I can most assuredly believe that John tortured some information out of a demon about Azazel's plan. Regardless, he had to have felt that demons were after his boy(s) given what happened with Mary and where it happened, so that alone would make him want to keep under the radar and moving around to keep hidden. Look at all the clues he discovered as to how to track Azazel. This is a man that knew

I will concede that John acted more that Dean didn't need the protection like Sam. I also concede that John did expect more out of Dean than he did Sam, which a lot of that, I think, goes to the fact that Dean was the older child. As you look at other families with one parent, there is always more expectations of the older children in protecting and caring for the younger siblings. I hear stories like that all the time, so in the Winchesters' case, I think that is typical for Dean and Sam. It is just exacerbated by the fact that the Winchesters' are monster hunters

That is very true. In this purely fictional case, however, as you said, the family were monster hunters, and what's worse - there was no. Social. Network. whatsoever for Dean to fall back on and rely on. There might have been the odd time with Bobby and Jim, but nowhere near as reliable as a child in that kind of situation would have needed. (My opinion)
And don't get me wrong - I love John the character. Which I reckon is mostly thanks to JDM. I'd say he helped a lot of people who otherwise probably wouldn't have stood a chance. And I would love for JDM to come back, but I think that the writers will have to tread very carefully to get it right

Ah, yes, John. I always wonder what exactly he knew, and since when. In In My Time of Dying John tells the Yellow Eyed Demon that he's known the truth about Sam and the other children for a while.
I really wish they had clarified what truth that was and how long exactly "a while" was. Months? Years? Did he actually know about the Demon blood? Oh wait, he didn't know about Sam's visions, did he, he only found out once they reunited... So, Lucifer's vessel??
And it's so bloody vague that I can't even head canon it properly. *aaaarghhhh*
