A pony entry for a change - I know I don't post pictures of them very much anymore. It doesn't mean I don't love them to bits though!! With the lack of new releases I haven't been as inspired, and I won't lie, I have a serious pullip addiction. Photographing ponies also isn't as dynamic and varied as pullips are - you can't pose the ponies!
Anyways - There's been much unrest in the pony community lately over Hasbro's decision to go with the Core 7 group of ponies. For those who don't collect ponies, it basically means that for the next year (and hopefully no longer than that!) the majority of ponies released (if not all of them) will be the same seven ponies. Over, and over again, with slight variations in their appearance. This has many, many people *really* pissed off. On top of that, *all* of the ponies are being released in the same pose. There is reason behind it I guess - although a pretty stupid one. There is new plastic clothing for them to wear that comes with some sets, and the pose is designed for everyone to be able to wear everything.
Hasbro has given their reasoning behind the core 7 - They want little girls to learn about the characters and "know" them. From what we heard at last years convention, this should be changing after 2008. From what I can gather, I think they are targeting a much younger age range than they used to. Information from the New York Toy fair going on this weekend seems to suggest (to me anyway) that the Littlest Pet Shop line is taking the place of MLP's for that age grouping - and to their credit the line has been extremely popular. I have a small LPS collection myself. They're churning those pets out the same way the we got a rediculous influx of ponies in 2005-2006.
It is frustrating. Don't get me wrong. I love My Little Ponies. I love the memories the bring back of my childhood. I love their cute faces and general happy appearance. It used to be *extremely* exciting seeing the first pics of who was coming out next and eventually hunting for them. There wasn't quite the variety there was in the G1's, but there were many really lovely, charming ponies coming out on a regular basis. I keep telling myself that if the core 7 will bring new interest to the line, get more little girls to fall in love, and strengthen to line so it can continue and grow, I think it will be worth it.
Yikes...long!! Getting to the point, I swear!! :P
I am definitely in the minority, but I am actually liking a lot of what is to come in 2008. At this point, I will have at least two, if not three of all of the core seven when all is said and done. (If not more depending on if we aren't yet seeing everything that will be released) The variations are subtle, but I like them. I think it would be kind of cool to have a shelf devoted to them and to see all the incarnations lined up together.
If you haven't seen these yet and are interested, here are the newly released pictures of the 2008 line from the NY Toy Fair:
http://toyfair08.asmzine.com/gallery/hasbro/my-little-pony/ Here are some pictures of the three core 7 ponies I have so far. I think they're really beautiful!
Pink and green has been my favorite color combo for years, so as soon as I saw pics of her, I knew I would have to find her! Cheerilee is pretty much a rehash of Cherry Blossom...I wish they had kept her name as it was!
Toola Roola used to look pretty different - and although she now bears a striking resemblance to Rarity, I still like her.
Sweetie Belle is probably the most exciting of the core 7 - Unicorns are pretty new to the G3 line, and she is the first white one. She did get stuck with another one of Hasbro's epic stupid names though!
Some older pics I've been meaning to post of most of my G3 unicorns. (I left out the original Rarity, cause I figured I didn't need two!)
Thanks for looking!! :)
So pony lovers...am I the only one who has some love for the core 7??
