I caught bits and pieces of Miami Vice when I was a kid (most of the seasons two and three, I'd say). That's pretty well, considering how little I watched TV back then.
My fannish approach to the show was woefully limited in the 80's. For example, I never wrote Miami Vice fan fiction. (If I remember right, I was more into Senna/Prost Formula 1 RPS.) I was also getting a bit too old to play cops and robbers with my friends, so fortunately I wasn't running around shouting "Miami Vice!" and busting my neighbours for drugs and prostitution. But I had the pictures of the cars and boats in my treasure box. And I remember dressing like Sonny Crockett one summer: white cotton trousers, a turquoise t-shirt, and then I borrowed white and pastel jackets from my brother and sister. And sunglasses! I probably planned to grow stubble, too.
Anyway, then I forgot the series for about twenty years. Last year I caught some random reruns (regrettably, the first one I saw was Cows of October -- a weak, disturbing and dull episode). Then I got a hold of the two disc episode collection "The Best of Miami Vice". Unexpectedly I got hooked. Don Johnson so sexy... And I totally had never before thought about the Burnett episodes as the fodder for plot bunnies! Have I been stupid or what? An amnesiac cop turns into a drug boss, and tries to kill his own partner. That piece of the canon generates indefinite amounts of what-ifs, missing scenes and speculation.
So I went and spent some money.
