Running after his toy, the young boy’s laughter rang through the dark house, echoed by the sound of the other children upstairs. They had been playing a game of catch and the boy had missed, the ball turning into a runaway as it fell downstairs. Footsteps pounded lightly on the wooden floors above, and the boy pouted.

“Wait for me!” he cried out, but he stopped suddenly, voice dying in his throat. His ball had stopped at the feet of a young woman in a snow-white kimono and he wouldn’t have hesitated if it weren’t for the blood staining the front of the fabric.

The boy shivered as the woman slowly knelt down and picked the ball up. He was frozen to the spot as their eyes met, hers glowing with a crazed light.

She held the ball out, her head tilted. A smile pulled at her lips and the sight of that smile could have sent a grown man running.

The boy back up a few steps before he turned on his heel and darted upstairs, stumbling as he hurried to get away. The ball was the last thing on his mind at that moment.

Sae’s smile slowly faded and she stood, holding the ball tight as if clutching a memory.

In the next moment, the ground rumbled and she was gone.

The ball rolled across the floor and bumped into the stairs, blood dripping from the leather hide.
