Title: What things may follow Rating: E Word Count: 1604 For: lit_chick08 Prompt: Ned/Cat: Ned learns what Cat likes (interpret as you want, but they did have five kids, sooo...)
I swear, your Ned/Cat fics are godsends, what with all the canon spaces left open that you fill in, and the sweet/sexy moments you capture between Ned and Cat while keeping it all in character. This one is no exception!
Looove that Ned was so concerned about not being the cause of Cat's laughter. Despite how little they knew each other at first, I think Ned wanted to help ease the transition for Catelyn, in his own way - like the sept he built, or had others build, for her! So much aww. And of course he would take any doubts about her comfort to heart, piling onto his regret or discontent of That Night. Ugh, Ned, so terrible at verbal communication.
But the physical way he expresses himself with Catelyn makes up for that, and you brought that out in such a good way here. I adore how the FOR DUTY! mantra shifts into something more intimate and personal for them. It's especially made more clear in that they're not having sex in the conventional way, for procreation. I also love knowing!Catelyn and that detail about how she's always surprised, but not in a bad way, when Ned comes to her room. It would be like Ned Stark to internally angst over that as well XD
Oh, and that line towards the end, of them not being in love, is wonderfully realistic, especially with the added hope for love to follow duty and desire. Guh, these two ♥ And the same goes for your writing of them!
Thank you so much!! And I agree re: Ned wanting to make Cat comfortable, I think it was just his nature to want to make ANY woman he had to marry comfortable.
Yes, I definitely wanted to make them have not-procreative sex. XD I think a lot of times with these two it's easy to skip right from 'dutiful serious bedding for Heir Making Purposes' straight to 'NOW WE ARE IN LOVE' and forget that there was probably a lot of inbetween - having sex for pleasure, having sex because they're both lonely at this juncture of their lives, having sex because they're healthy and young and it feels good. So this was a bit of moving from having sex for THE SAKE OF WINTERFELL to having sex for its own enjoyment, but they're definitely not at the love stage yet. ;-) But I think Ned is enough of an idealist to hope at this point that 'well, maybe one day.'
