Sh-Shaun...? Shaun?! What's going on??

[A hand goes to her forehead; she's so disoriented.]

What happened?? Where's the Apple? Desmond? [God, it hurt to say his name.] And Rebecca?!

[Hand to her aching head, Lucy just sighs, trying to regain her equilibrium as well as latch on to the historian's prattle. Most of it goes in one ear and out of the other, save for the very last.]

...what? Rebecca was left behind in the Vault? What happened, Shaun?? Is Desmond all right? Are we secure here? The Templars will have tapped our location by now...

[That she herself isn't bleeding from the massive wound in her stomach...she just can't deal with right now.]

[It is not until the man's face shifts to a second, and then to the more familiar third that Cesare recognizes why the man seemed familiar. Ezio? Not Ezio, but related, and related to the second face. Just as interesting was the seeming object of the dream, the golden sphere.

Cesare has watched several dreams now but usually never comments on any of them, finding them of passing little interest by and large. But this one he has to ask about.]

What was that sphere?

[Confusion gives way to wariness; what sort of phone is this? And just who the hell is talking to her? Lucy stares at the screen, nonplussed. But the job instinct kicks in - damage control, always. And when in doubt, answer a question with a question.]

...who are you?

[He sees no reason not to tell her, as far as he knows it will build the small gap of trust needed for her to answer his own question.]

Cardinal Cesare Borgia at your service, my Lady. And your name?

[Okay, now she knows she's still hallucinating. Because there's no way in hell he just said his name was Cesare Borgia. No way at all. She stares at the phone, trying to school her features into bland confusion.]

--I'm sorry, I didn't hear...?

[It was not a dream that was otherwise calm and free of stress, but for the faces that came to that dream was what caused Ezio's own distress. The faces of Altair, himself, and then Desmond .. and the Apple's presence.

How can this be, who is this woman.]

You are in some trouble? [First and foremost, her call for help had him answer in such a manner...]

[...that voice. It penetrated her confusion like an arrow, mostly because it was familiar. But Lucy also knew it was an impossibility...because that voice belonged to that man...and that man was long dead.

In fact, it was his steps they had been retracing so frantically, his clues and memories which had led them to Rome, to the Vault hidden beneath the Coliseum...

Lucy didn't dare say his name. To do so would somehow prove this insanity, and she doubted she could handle it. Please, let me be wrong. Please, please let me be wrong...]

I...I-I think so, yes.

It would be such a dream that would suggest as much.

Do you know who I am? [No matter how ridiculous the question was, for it was quite obvious, he must make sure.]

A dream? [God, how she wished. Because then it wouldn't be real, none of this would be real. But then...it'd seemed like a dream since they'd stepped into the Vault. At least for her.

No. The pain was too vivid to have been a mere dream. The Apple's power far too strong to have been a dream. But then came that damning question and Lucy paused, eyes wide. If this wasn't a dream...then...what was it?]

I--

[And Lucy bit her tongue. Pretend, Luce. Pretend it's all a dream, as he said. You can do it. Promise. So she answered, but her voice was little more than a whisper.]

...I know of you, maestro. But not in such a way you will believe. ...even if this is a dream.

[Altair had been about to turn off the feed when he saw Desmond's face. He watched as Desmond was forced to attack the woman and wondered if this was part of what the novice was keeping from him.]

You are safe here. Calm down, none shall attack you. [comforting skills = the suck]

[He stares back at her for several moments before becoming impatient.]

Do you no longer speak?

[The stare becomes a glower.]

...you're dead.
