Chapter 4

Reaching his room, Koki threw himself onto his bed, mumbling incoherently. It took him a few minutes to realize that it was really quiet. Looking around, he found that he was the only one in the room.

Where are Junno and Jin? Getting up, he made his way to the window. This place had at least one good thing: the view. He loved the view of the ocean. It always calmed him down. He wished he could go there. Ever since he could remember, he loved being near the ocean. It always brought back good memories. His parents loved the ocean too. Reaching into his pocket, Koki felt for his picture, but found nothing.

“What the hell?!” He reached into his other pocket but found it empty.

“What the hell is going on? I never put it anywhere else. Where is it?” He moved to his bed and searched for it, just in case it fell there, but found nothing. Thinking back, he tried to remember where he might have lost it.

“Ah. Maybe when I crashed into that guy…” Koki ran out the room to search the hallway but again found nothing. “Damn it! Where is it?”

“Ah, Koki-kun. Just the person I was looking for.” Hearing his name called out, Koki turned and found himself facing Ueda. Oh Shit. Not him. Looking around, he found that they were the only ones there.

“I heard that you ran out of your session with Maru. That’s against the rules, you know.”

Koki’s expression went from nervous to annoyed.

“That wasn’t my fault. He’s the one-“

“Now, since you’re not busy, how about completing your punishment? Follow me.” Ueda turned and made his way to his office.

“But I have-“ Koki began but quickly stopped when he glanced at Ueda’s face.

Once they reached his office, Ueda sat behind his desk and pointed at some boxes by the window.

“All of the files in those boxes need to be arranged alphabetically. I suggest you get to work right away or else you’ll be here all day.” With that, he turned to his computer and completely ignored Koki the rest of the day.

Mumbling, Koki made his way to the pile of boxes and began to work. Man, this is gonna take me all day to finish and I still have to find that picture! Koki glared at Ueda, but the other kept on ignoring him.

Maru sat in his office, looking over the picture in his hands. The family in the picture looked very happy and Maru was sure that this was Koki’s family. Where are his parents now? Maru wondered.

“Nakamaru-san?” his secretary called “We have the information you requested.”

“Thank you. So what did you find?” Maru asked, receiving the papers.

“We asked the police to run his name through the system and we found him in the missing section. Apparently, an orphanage reported him missing about three years ago when he ran away from his foster home. They gave us all the information they had.”

“Thank you. I’ll read over this.” The secretary excused herself and left. Maru opened the file and began reading.

So his name really is Koki…He’s nineteen… He’s been in an orphanage since he was about three… That’s a long time… So his parents died in a car accident… Maru placed the file down and picked up the picture. He smiled as he saw the little boy holding on tightly to the blue teddy bear. Opening the drawer, he carefully set the picture down and closed it. He needed to find a way for Koki to open up to him and trust him, but not now. He had another patient to care for. He quickly grabbed his notebook and sat on a couch waiting for his next patient to come.

**************************

“Finished!” Koki declared happily. It had taken him less time to finish than he thought. When he heard no response, he turned and found Ueda busy with his computer.

“Ueda-san, I finished.” Ueda finally looked away from his computer and looked at the boxes then up at Koki.

“You can leave.” He said in a serious tone.

“H-Hai” Koki quickly made his way to the door.

“Oh and Koki. Don’t try and pull something like that again.” Ueda smirked.

“Maybe Maru won’t be there next time to save you.” Koki nodded and ran out the office as fast as he could.

Man, that guy is so creepy. Koki made his way once again to his room, but stopped when he remembered why he left. The picture… I have to find it. Where did I leave it? Suddenly, Koki stopped in the middle of the hall way.

I probably dropped it there… He quickly turned and made his way to Maru’s office. Once he reached it, he quietly knocked on the door.

He heard the muffled “Come in” and quietly entered the office. Even if he was mad at Maru, he still wanted to find his picture. Coughing, he stood in front of Maru’s desk and waited for the other to notice him.

“Koki. What are you doing here? Is there anything you need?” Maru asked smiling up at him.

“I… I lost something and I was wondering if I dropped it here?” He asked quietly looking away from Maru.

“What did you lose?”

“A… A picture. Is it here?” Koki asked hopefully. Maru reached into his drawer and pulled out the picture, handing it over to him. Koki quickly took the picture from Maru.

“Thank you. I thought I lost it somewhere. I guess I dropped it here in the morning.”

“You didn’t drop it.” Koki quickly looked up at Maru.

“Eh?”

“You didn’t drop it. I took it from you this morning while you were trying to choke me.” Maru answered in a calm voice. Koki stared disbelievingly at Maru.

“Do you remember when I brought you here, and I said I knew three things about you?” Koki nodded

“Well, this was the third one. When that police officer asked if they had taken any of your possessions, you quickly grabbed your side pocket, so I knew you had something important there. I wanted to know what it was.”

Koki continued to stare at Maru. He felt like punching him in the face for taking it away from him, but he also couldn’t believe that just by one encounter, he had discovered something like that. In all the years he had been in foster homes, not a single person had discovered he had that picture.

“Are they your parents?”  Koki looked at the picture in his hands.

“Hai”

“Where are they now?”

“They died a long time ago.” Koki responded clearing his throat.

“I’m sorry.”

Koki walked away from Maru and sat in the couch. “It should be me saying that. It was all my fault.”

Maru quickly stood from his desk and sat next to Koki. “What are you talking about? You were a baby. How could it be your fault?”

Koki looked up at Maru

“It was my fault… My parents had gone on a trip and had left me with one of their friends for the night in case they didn’t return on time… I was crying and I wouldn’t stop, so they called my parents and asked my mom to talk to me over the phone to calm me down… But I just kept on crying and asking for them… They said they would go home right away and pick me up… But they never made it…” Koki’s shoulder’s began to shake.

“Koki… It wasn’t your fault.”

“Yes it was! At first, I didn’t know how they died, but one day I overheard my parents’ friends talking. They were my foster parents until I turned five. I heard them saying that if it wasn’t for me, my parents would still be alive, so it’s all my fault…” Koki cried silently and Maru watched as tears fell from his eyes onto the picture. For some reason, seeing the other like this made Maru’s heart hurt. Without realizing it, he had put his arms around Koki, trying to calm him down with soothing words.

At first Koki, went stiff as soon as Maru’s arm went around him, but after a moment, he relaxed into the embrace and wrapped his arms around Maru, accepting the comfort. He didn’t know why, but with Maru’s arms around him, he felt safe.
