Chapter 3
Ueda sat back in his chair looking out the window as he blocked out the voices in the meeting. Nothing interesting ever came from them, they wold just talk about things that were, in Ueda's opinion, common sense and he always wondered why he had to attend them. Out of the corner of his eye he spotted that man, sitting in the corner, looking over papers. Ueda secretly observed him, he wore simple black slack that fit his long legs perfectly, his white shirt had the three top buttons undone and the long sleeves were folded up to his elbows. He had a serious expression as he continued looking over the papers in his hands it made Ueda wonder what he was reading. He looks good. He remembered what the man had said in his room earlier. Junno... Ueda smiled, I like his name...and his smile.
Suddenly as if he had felt a gaze on him Junno looked up and Ueda found himself gazing into brown eyes as Junno smiled brightly at him. Quickly Ueda broke eye contact and gazed out the window, his heart was beating fast and he blamed it on embarrassment rather than that warm smile he had been given. But he does have a beautiful smile...wait...what the hell! I did not just think that...what's wrong with me. I don't even know the guy. He shook his head and tried to forget what had just gone through his mind. His eyes caught movement in the court yard below, focusing his attention he found two boys playing near the rocks. He watched as the older one walked ahead and made sure everything was safe for the one behind him, when they both reached a big rock the older boy jumped up and turned putting out his hand to help the smaller boy up, once they were both at the top they smiled at each other and sat next to each other. Ueda smiled sadly remembering when his brother and him used to play like that. He vaguely remembered how his brother would always look out for him everywhere they went, Ueda used to always feel safe when he was with him. But now that all had changed, his brother was the crown prince and he had no time to be hanging around his little brother. He didn't even know his brother now.
“-ness?”
“Prince Ueda?” Hearing his name he quickly turned and found everyone looking up at him.
“I'm sorry. I have many things on my mind.” Ueda tried to cover his slip.
“It's alright your Highness we understand. We were discussing how we should try and...” Ueda lost interest.
*****************************
Junno sat quietly looking over the schedule for the day. It seemed as if today would be a easy day for the prince only two meeting and a dinner with his family. Junno frowned at the paper, Doesn't he always have dinner with his family? Then he felt like someone was staring at him, quickly looking up he found the Prince's eyes on him. Why is he staring at me? Is the meeting over? Did I do something wrong? Ueda continued to stare at him, not knowing what else to do Junno smiled at the prince. His eyes widened at the sudden move of the Prince who turned to look out the window but Junno continued to gaze at him. He watched as something caught the Prince's attention as he sat up on his seat, Junno quickly looked out the window and saw two boys playing, looking back at Ueda he was surprised when a sad smile made its way into his face. He looks so sad. Junno was brought out of his thoughts when he heard a voice addressing the Prince, he quickly went back to work but a thought kept circling his mind. Why did the Prince have such a sad expression? He really wanted to know.
*********************************
The meeting finished and Ueda quickly rushed out the room making Junno run to catch up with him.
“Your highness you have another meeting in two hours. Is there anything that I can do for you in the meantime?” They had reached Ueda's room by the time Junno had finished speaking. Ueda turned abruptly around to face him.
“You can leave me the hell alone or better yet how about you quit and get the hell out!” Junno stood frozen and gazed at the him. Frustrated Ueda turned, walked into his room and slammed the door shut leaving Junno bewildered as to what he had done wrong.
Junno walked calmly across the hall and into his room deciding that he would let the Prince calm down before the next meeting.
From around the corner Ryo hid and watched the scene take place, when he was sure that Junno was safely in his room he walked up to Ueda's room and pushed the door open.
“What the hell? Nishikido! Ever heard of knocking?” Ueda screamed from his bed.
“I'm so sorry Princess I didn't know it was that time of the month already.” A pillow flew past his head.
“What the hell do you want? Did you hire another maid for me?”
Ryo smirked. “No, actually I came to give you something.”
“What?”
“Aren't you curious?”
“About what Nishikido?”
“About him?”
Ueda sighed in frustration, “Who the hell are you talking about?”
“Taguchi Junnosuke.” Ryo threw a folder at Ueda. “Here's the background check we did on him. Just got it a few hours ago.”
Ueda glared at Ryo and pushed the folder away. “You hired a complete stranger and didn't even do a background check before placing him in the palace?”
“Yeah.”
“That's a security risk. What if he was murderer?”
“Awww Is the Princess scared?”
“Fuck you Nishikido?”
“Not now Princess.” Another pillow flew towards him this time hitting its mark, his face.
“Get out!” Ueda took a book in his hands ready to throw it and Ryo ran out the room but he managed to get the last word.
“Read it and then you'll understand why I hired him.”
Once again his room was quiet and Ueda threw himself on his bed but he found himself gazing over at the folder, his curiosity about the man was really getting to him. His fingers slowly inched their way across his bed until they landed on the folder. He took it in his hands and gazed at it for a couple of minutes and an idea crossed his mind. Maybe I could use this. There could be something in here that could help me in my plan. He smirked and opened the folder to begin reading.
An hour later Ueda put the folder down after reading its entire contents. Damn you Nishikido! Ueda slammed his hand against the bed. How the hell am I supposed to make someone like that quit! Ueda looked over at the folder. A younger brother who needs surgery and he's their only source of income. I feel like a jerk. Ueda sat in his bed thinking about what he should do next. He didn't want to cause Junno to quit his job but he still didn't want anyone to be near him. He knew the consequences about letting someone near his heart, and he wouldn't make that mistake again. He heard a knock on his door before it opened and the man he was thinking about stepped in.
“Your Highness I'm here to pick up some things.” He watched as Junno walked towards his bathroom, picked up a basket and walked back out, he could hear him talking to a maid as she took the basket and walked away. Junno stepped back into the room.
“Your Highness would you like me to bring you anything?”
Ueda gazed at him, Better start now... “Listen I want to apologize for this morning. I was being a jerk and I'm sorry.”
Junno stood shocked by the door as listened to the Prince. “I-Its alright your Highness, you don't need to apologize to someone like me.”
Ueda stood and walked towards Junno. “Please accept my apology.”
“A-Alright. Thank you...Your Highness.” There was an awkward silence as they both avoided each other's eyes.
“Why?” Junno asked confused.
“Eh?”
“Why is the Prince apologizing to me all of a sudden?”
“I told you why.” For some reason Ueda didn't want Junno to know that he knew about his situation. He gave a quick glance at the other and found him staring curiously at him. He looks really cute like that... Ueda's eyes widened at this and he quickly moved away from the man. Why was this happening to him? Why did this man affect him like this? He didn't even know the guy.
“Leave I want to rest.”
Junno bowed and made his way out. Once he was sure he was alone he moved toward the door and locked it, making his way to his closet he moved his clothes aside and pulled out a big case from the back. Setting it down gently on his bed Ueda carefully pulled out his most favorite possession. He sat on his bed and softly bought his fingers across the strings as they released a simple but peaceful melody. Ueda sat there for a while as he allowed himself to relax as he quietly played his guitar occasionally humming along with the tune his fingers created. This was his secrete. Nobody except one person knew he did this but that person didn't talk t him anymore. Did they know he still played? His fingers stilled as he remembered the day he was given this, that person always knew what he wanted, they were brothers after all. He looked down at the beautiful guitar, this was the last thing his brother ever gave him, after that it was like he didn't even exist for him anymore. He remembered chasing after his brother and asking when they would play again but his brother would just ignore him.
There was a knock at the door. Has it been an hour already? He quickly but carefully put the guitar away in its hiding place. He ran towards the door and opened it. Junno stood nervously by the door and for some reason Ueda wanted to make him feel at ease.
“The meeting will be starting soon Prince Ueda.” He nodded and walked out the room, slowly followed by Junno.
*******************************
As the meeting progressed Junno glanced at the Prince. Ever since he had apologized he had become really quiet and reclusive. He noticed the glazed over look on his face and all he wanted to do was reassure him that everything would be alright. Why though? I don't even know him and all I want to do is be able to make him smile. That's the conclusion that Junno had come up with while he sat in his room for an hour. Every time he would remember the sad expression on his face all he kept thinking about was how he wanted to make him smile, to make him forget whatever made him sad. And Junno knew he should definitely shouldn't be thinking about things like that. Those feelings were unacceptable, especially if they were for the Prince. How is it possible for me to have feelings like this for someone I've only known for half a day...It's not possible. But no matter how many times he told himself that he still felt the need to make that man smile and assure him that everything would be alright. For now he could do nothing but make sure that his job was done at its best, he needed the money for the surgery and the faster he got it then the faster he could leave this place.
Across the room Ueda's mind decided to continue the thoughts he hoped he didn't have to think about. Junno. What's so special about him? How can I be thinking like this about a total stranger. This is all Nishikido's fault. I'm going to kill him...Ugh but then Pi will be mad at me...
“Prince Ueda do you have anything you would like to add to the meeting?” Ueda waved his hand and the rest nodded, standing up he looked at everyone, “Have a nice day.” and walked out the room. He heard Junno slowly follow behind him. They reached his room and Junno stood by the door.
“Prince Ueda please remember that you have dinner with your parents this evening at six. I will be here an hour early to remind you.” Ueda said nothing and moved towards his window, looking down he was shocked at what he saw. It must have shown in his face because soon Junno was standing next to him. “Your highness are you ok?” Ueda looked at Junno's concerned face and nodded.
“I just saw someone I hadn't seen in a long time.”Once again Junno looked curiously at him but said nothing further.
“Your high-”
“Tatsuya.”
“Eh?”
“Call me Tatsuya. “He didn't know what had possessed him to say that.
“I don't think-”
“I don't like being called highness. It annoys me. Just call me by my name.”
“Ano...then can I just call you Ueda for now? I feel weird calling the Prince by his name. I mean its-” He was cut off by an amused Ueda.
“Alright. As long as you stop calling me your highness. Its annoying.”
Junno smiled, “Ok Ueda it is.”
Ueda looked out the window again but the person who had been standing there was now gone. Well at least I saw him. He smiled sadly. Suddenly he felt two fingers poking his cheeks, looking up he found Junno looking at him with a warm smile.
“Smile Ueda.” He said softly and Ueda felt his heart beat faster, but for the first time in a long time Ueda found himself smiling a genuine smile and all because of this man.
Junno's smile widened as Ueda smiled up at him. He has a beautiful smile. They were both so close to each other, face to face and Junno's hands had unconsciously began caressing Ueda's face.
“Ueda guess what...oh” The two immediately scrambled apart at the sound of the voice.
“Koki you idiot, I told you to knock.” A voice said behind the man Junno figured to be Koki. “Don't just barge into people's rooms.”
“Sorry Ueda but you know how this idiot is. Oh sorry we didn't know you had company.” A man appeared behind Koki.
Ueda cleared his throat and walked away from Junno. “Its alright he works here. He's my personal maid.”
Koki laughed. “Ueda has a personal maid!” He fell to the floor laughing. “Maru...” Koki said as he tried to control himself, “Ueda...maid...”
“Koki shut up.” Maru said as he walked around the man on the floor and stepped into the room. He turned to face Junno. “Nice to meet you. I'm Nakamaru Yuichi and that idiot over there is Tanaka Koki.” Junno bowed.
“I'm Taguchi Junnosuke. Ueda's personal maid.” At this Koki began laughing harder.
“Yeah personal maid...did you see how they were right now?”
Ueda felt his face heat up. “Shut up Koki! He's just my employee, nothing more.” He said avoiding everyone's eyes but as he did he failed to notice the brief look of hurt that passed across Juno's face.
“Excuses me I need to finish doing other things.” Junno said quickly and rushed out the room.
Everyone stared at the door as it closed quickly. “What's wrong with him?” Koki asked as he got up.
Ueda shrugged also caught off guard at Junno's behavior. “Anyways...” Koki turned to Ueda, “Like I was saying, guess what I'm doing this weekend?” He asked excitedly. Ueda shrugged still distracted. “Well its more like where we are going this weekend.” Koki pulled out a few tickets from his pocket.
“Its the new club that just opened and I reserved it for all of us to go.” Koki squealed in excitement.
Ueda backed off shaking his head. “No! I'm not going to one of your crazy parties again.” He still remembered all of Koki's crazy friends.
“You have to come. I promise this time its only going to be us. Come on! Please?”
“No.”
“Please?”
“No.” They were interrupted by Maru's cellphone.
“Sorry. I'll be right back.” He walked out the room to answer his phone.
“Plea-” The rest of the conversation was blocked out as Maru closed the door.
“Moshi Moshi? Hai. That's alright just leave them there and I'll pick them up later. Ok. Thanks. Bye.” Maru hung up his phone and was about to go back inside when he spotted Junno leaning on the wall.
“Taguchi-kun?” Startled the man looked up.
“Oh Nakamaru-kun. What wrong? Is there something you need?”
“Call me Maru. “
“Junno.” They both laughed.
“What are you doing here? I thought you had things to do?” Junno smiled sheepishly and Maru smiled kindly at him. They both leaned against the wall.
“So how did you end up working here?” Maru asked.
“Nishikido-kun asked me if I wanted to work here. Today was my first day actually.”
“Well it seems like you've made a good impression on Ueda. He even lets you call him that by his name and he hasn't fired you.”
Junno laughed. “He tried but Nishikido-kun said he didn't have he power to. So I guess he gave up.”
“Don't worry Ueda is very nice once you get past his barriers. Trust me I've known him for a few years.” As Maru spoke he began playing with his phone.
“That's a cute picture.” Junno pointed at the screen.
“Oh. Thanks. Me and Koki took it a long time ago.” Maru smiled fondly at the picture.
“He must be someone special for you.”
“He is...I really like him.” It took him a while to realize he had said that out loud. Shocked he turned to Junno who laughed.
“Don't worry your secrete is safe with me.” Maru released a sigh of relief.
“Why don't you tell him how you feel?”
“What if he doesn't feel the same about me? I don't want to risk our friendship. Besides-”
“Maru where did you go?” Koki's voice cut off Maru as he stepped out the room. “There you are! I finally got him to agree to go!”
“No you annoyed him to the point where he just wanted to shut you up.” Koki pouted.
“I'll bring you all some drinks.” Junno said as he spotted a maid coming his way.
“Ok thanks Junno.” Maru said walking into the room and dragging Koki with him.
A few minutes later Junno walked into the room and placed the drinks on the table. He turned to Maru and handed him a drink. “Don't worry Maru, everything will be alright.” Maru smiled and squeezed Junno's arm laughing.
Koki's eyes narrowed at the gesture and it didn't go unnoticed by Junno. I have an idea.
Unfortunately what did go unnoticed were Ueda's clenched fists.
