Goodbyes
Tatsuya, Fumie, Haru (Domestic Bakaleya verse), G, 560 words

A/N: The idea came to me at Kansai airport last January, when we were lining up to the security check and there were cute families saying goodbye to each other. I wrote like half of it on the plane back home. And now I'm finally posting it... It's time for goodbyes and leaving for myself so it's fitting though!
Set in March 2026.

The airport is vast, bustling and exciting, and more than once Haru almost gets lost in the endless sea of legs and big suitcases, as she always starts wandering away as soon as Tatsuya lets go of her. After the fourth time Tatsuya finally gets tired of chasing her (and afraid of her really getting lost) and lifts her up, telling that Mom would soon be ready with the check-in.

Haru keeps watching the place and people around them with the curiosity and amazement of a 4-year-old, and Tatsuya can only smile at that. On the contrary, to him, the airport will probably always be the place filled with the memories of endless anxiousness and discomfort. Memories of reunions but even more the ones of parting. He secretly hates them, has always hated, and now he’s there again, seeing Fumie off. Though only for a week this time, and not alone.

Haru waves at her mother when she spots her walking their way and demands to get on her arms instead. Tatsuya passes Haru to Fumie and takes her hand luggage as they start heading towards the security check port. There’s quite a line right then, so they stop a bit farther to wait.

"Will you be okay?" Fumie wonders half-aloud when passing Haru back to Tatsuya and re-checking her passport and boarding pass.

"Of course we will," Tatsuya assures easily. "Right, Haru?"

"Un!" Haru nods and then cheerfully adds: "And dad said we can eat hamburgers and ice cream every day!"

"...Oh, he did?" Fumie asks slowly, raising her eyebrows at Tatsuya, who at least has the tendency to look sheepish.

He clears his throat. "Well, we’ll talk about that at home then, okay?" he mutters to Haru.

"Look, it’s okay," he assures again when Fumie’s still eyeing him like he was a disobedient child. "We’ll be fine."

She sighs and quickly checks the timetable board above them. 30 minutes to boarding.

"Call me if anything comes up. I’ll try to call every night anyway. You know where the clean clothes are, bath around seven o’clock, don’t forget her lunch bento-"

"I know."

"-don’t stay up too late and really, no hamburgers or ice cream every day-"

"I know," Tatsuya says emphatically. "It’s okay, really."

She smiles at him and wonders in passing who’s really going to miss who during the upcoming week. Like knowing, Haru picks that moment to reach over and wrap her tiny arms around her neck for a hug. She strokes her soft pigtails and feels tears in the corners of her eyes. It’s time to go.

"Be a good girl and take care of dad while mom’s away, okay?" she tells Haru when pulling away.

"I will," Haru answers cheerfully.

The line is slowly moving forward and after final quick hugs and kisses, Fumie hurries to the end of it behind an elder couple while Tatsuya and Haru stand there watching. She turns to wave at them one last time before walking out of sight around the corner.

Tatsuya sighs. Only a week, he thinks.

He supposes he needs to be as brave as Haru, who already wants down from his arms and is pointing at a Doraemon suitcase some kid has.

"Okay, let’s go," Tatsuya says while he lets Haru down and takes her hand. "Do you want an ice cream?"
